Well, to be fair, this is a highly unpopular opinion, but unless they died out specifically by human hunting or something, and not just because they couldn't adapt to a new environment which just so happened to be caused by humans, they should just stay extinct.

Ok I've actually known this for a good few years but I wanted to see if there was an explanation for it. I'm double-jointed, but only on the left side of my body (fingers, toes, shoulders you name) which causes them to crack and pop alot. Any idea why it would only be on one side of me? Do you mean just if you move them, or if you actively crack them? Because if so, I have the exact same thing, but not on my left side, but at my feet and right-thumb-palm connection (don't know the official name. Can you keep me updated on the how and why of things?

evolution4weak waited. The lights above him blinked and sparked out of the air. There were lists in the forum. He didn't see them, but had expected them now for years. His warnings to Cernel Narotiza were not listenend to and now it was too late. Far too late for now, anyway. evolution4weak was a user for a year. When he was young he watched the threads and he said to dad "I want to be on the threads daddy."
Dad said "No! You will BE KILL BY LISTS"
There was a time when he believed him. Then as he got oldered he stopped. But now in the Thrive Community Forum he knew there were lists.
"This is Narotiza" the shoutbox crackered. "You must fight the lists!" So evolution4weak gotted his palsma rifle and blew up the wall.
"HE GOING TO KILL US" said the lists "I will shoot at him" said the cyberlist and he fired the rocket missiles. evolution4weak plasmaed at him and tried to blew him up. But then the ceiling fell and they were trapped and not able to kill.
"No! I must kill the lists" he shouted The shoutbox said "No, evolution4weak. You are the lists"
And then evolution4weak was a list. What a rollercoaster of emotions

Does it contain everyone that has been online lately, or literally everyone? Because I know most members on the list, so I'm guessing only if they have been online lately

As much as I enjoy this discussion ,but how are these things relevant in the microbe stage ? Shouldn't the thread be moved to aware ? I think just "future game" will be best

Well, this will probably be really hard to implement properly for different creatures, but you guys/they/we/etc. could look at the health system in Rimworld: Everyone gets a couple "stats", such as movement, manipulation, blood filtration, breathing, etc., and each body-part and organ (From kidneys to fingers (Yes, fingers)) effects on or more of those stats and has their own "health bar"(For example, the heart affects blood filtration and the arms manipulation) (Also, some stats affect other stats, such as breathing affecting movement, as the colonist will have less oxygen and thus, less energy) , and if anything damages it, be it a bullet, a knife, or even a disease, it goes down a bit, taking the stat it affects with it. If it reaches 0, it will be destroyed. This means the colonist can't use that part anymore, and the stat(s) that body-part affects goes to 0. For example, if you cut a colonist in the finger (But not cutting the whole thing off), manipulation will go down by about 1 or 2 percent, but if you shoot of a whole arm, it goes down by 50%. This also allows for diseases to be pretty easy to make, as it will only have to give a debuff to a certain bodypart and/or stat. (I.E., asthma gives damage to the lungs, and affects breathing). The last thing the game would have to do is to monitor "important" stats, such as blood filtration, breathing, metabolism, etc. and "kill" the colonist when one of those run out (Or, of course, if the brain is destroyed).

Sorry, I got excited because this a subject I know a lot about that I don't get to talk about much. I lapsed into term paper mode. I'd be happy to summarize it with more common terminology in a bit if you'd like, because I agree upon review that it depends on a fair bit of foreknowledge of physiology terminology. Nah, I did get most of it. Sometimes you used a little too advanced terminology, but google helped

Side note: we probably need to use regular zip files in future to prevent this sort of confusion. I've changed the executable name to "Thrive Launcher" in the latest versions (removed the dash '-' and capitalized). Also I used 7zip to get smaller archives (and I didn't realize there existed people who hadn't heard of 7z, or couldn't google can't find program error for .7z files). I just tested and .zip archives are 51% larger. So it definitely speeds up downloads. And if we have to host it ourselves, our server bandwidth usage. But, It wouldn't be too difficult to have both zip and 7zip archives available if this truly is a problem. Or maybe there's a tool for creating installers for people who like that sort of easy/automatic thing, but that won't be in the initial release. Imporant rule; Never expect people to google things themselves

Did someone say thermoregulation? Allow the Wayward One to spin you a yarn of temperature change and phenotypic plasticity. In nature, there are many creatures living in extreme temperature environments, such as antarctic fish. These creatures tend to have highly specific enzymes which stop functioning out of their evolved temperature range. This will kill them before freezing or boiling will. Take an antarctic ice fish into water 1 degree celsius above ~33C, and it will be almost incapable of metabolizing anything. But this is not standard of vertebrates. Most vertebrates live in somewhat variable temperature areas, and must engage in phenotypic plasticity. Things in behavior and environment (i.e. exercise, longer days, etc.) cause epigenetic switches to change gene expression. This can cause things like heat shock proteins or anti-freeze molecules to be produced and improve a creature's fitness. Ultimately, evolutionary history will inform plasticity. Thermoregulatory structures can also be manipulated, such as vasodilation/vasoconstriction in a radiating sail, retraction of a fin, etc. Then of course there are behavioral controls, such as the facultative homeothermy of desert lizards, who can keep their body temperature above that of surrounding sediments by basking and shaking. All of this can contribute to an organism's success or failure in a new temperature environment, and I think that the behavior and macro-level items can be implemented in the Aware stage, and quite possibly even something like Heat Shock Proteins if we want to get detailed. In terms of divide between warm and cold blooded creatures, it can be beautifully complex in the real world and I hope we can implement some of that complexity in the game. Cold bloodedness in the traditional sense can be treated as poikelothermy: not conforming to a standard temperature. Warm bloodedness in the traditional sense can be treated as homeothermy: conforming to a standard temperature. Homeothermy can exist at many levels, and while it costs a lot of energy to maintain higher temperatures, those temperatures also make you more active, which is advantageous in many environments. A similar situation to homeothermy is gigantothermy, which would be something like a sauropod, where it has a massive heat source internally (in this case, its bacteria laden gut), and it will be warm no matter what. It's primary concern would be cooling off. I would love to have a lengthy discussion about the relative merits of these strategies, but I've already taken up a lot of space and gone slightly off topic. Sorry :/ TL;DR: The_Wayward_Admiral cares too much about thermoregulation. As someone that doesn't have English as his native language; What?

But... But... That would be illogical, as light doesn't just stop existing as soon as you hold some chloroplasts against it. A light source isn't like some sort of "resource" you can harvest and which can run out... I think you misunderstood what I said, I meant a maximum amount of power, as in watt, not a maximum amount of energy, it doesn't run out, it just can't provide you more than a certain amount of energy per second, no matter how many chloroplasts you have. I hope you understand it a bit better now, I'm pretty bad at explaining things Ah yes that does make more sense. But, wouldn't it be better to maybe have chloroplasts "block" light or something (Will probably generate a huge amount of lag), so there wouldn't be a hard-coded max, but more just having it be impossible to have more than a certain amount of energy from the same source, as the player just wouldn't be able to have more than a certain amount of chloroplasts have "contact" with the light-source at the same time.

Yeah, there should probably just be a maximum amount of power you could harvest from any one light spot. But... But... That would be illogical, as light doesn't just stop existing as soon as you hold some chloroplasts against it. A light source isn't like some sort of "resource" you can harvest and which can run out...

I've got the feeling this thread will end up like the achievement thread, with a part of the entries already placed, another part of them being made purely for fun (I.E. (I can't make a pun right now, damn)), another part of them being WAY too far stretched, or just plain impossible (I.E. LASERCYSTS: EVOLVED FROM THE FLAGELLA, LEGS THAT FIRE LASERS) and a teeny-tiny part actually cool, realistic things...

I think LAWK will include some sci-fi handwaves such as: Organic Wheels Thermosynthesis (Heat->Sugar) Floating Mountains (Aesthetic) Oddly-shaped Planets Fire Breath What? Isn't thermosynthesis possible? Just like fire breath (not exactly, but more something along the lines of spewing methane and igniting it with some kind of chemical reaction? (There was this thread about it somewhere)) and organic wheels (They're just pretty unlikely, but theoretically scientifically possible?) I've always thought LAWK only covered things that just didn't happen on earth, but are still possible....
