This is all in relation to LAWK (Life as we know) Being off for the most part, keep that in mind. Apologies if this has been discussed before in greater detail, but I just wish to know.

Hi Forums, I was thinking with a friend today "Would life be able to form on other worlds that isnt orbiting a star/in a gas giant", so I thought I would come here to discuss with you guys what would be possible and impossible for life to form in a LAWK-less universe perhaps.

Though keep in mind this is also about how far life can get in these worlds, obviously some cant get past unicellular, others multi cellular, we dont know. But this is why I come here, to discuss and see what you guys think, so here's a few ideas.

Life may be able to form on rogue planets that are way away from any stars, cells could form around thermal vents and live off of them using thermosynthesis, how far would that get? Another question is how would life form/if life would even form in a gas giant world, after all there are some cellular creatures that can float in midair due to their light weight, though im not sure if they could even develop in the air. Thoughts anyone?

This would be cool. I would like to explore space like Mathew McConaughey. I personally want to see a planet orbit a binary star. Or if it was non-LAWK, I would like to see binary planets. Like planets that orbit each other while they orbit a star.

Atrox well planets can orbit black holes, do you mean planets with life?

timetraveler22 I think planets like that exist, I mean if Pluto/Charon can have a ratio of mass like that, why wouldent other planets?

You mean like a rogue planet? Well by assumption we can think that they would have a sort of thermal based life instead of light based, after all, no star near them. The world would be a huge icy tundra and the life on it would live near any source of heat created by the planet itself, intelligent life would be extremely unlikely, but there could probably be cave dwelling creatures using fire for warmth, like huge alien polar bears.

Don't want to distract from the overall conversation here (it's all pretty interesting), just thought I'd pitch in an old idea that I brought over from the old forum:

This is pertaining towards gas giants, but there are other forms of interesting planet types to consider. For example a tidally locked planet, where one side faces the sun all the time and would be scorched clean, while the other side would be frozen. Another would be a form of night planet, where it's constantly dark, it could for example be orbiting a very dim star that doesn't give off a lot of light, or it could be constantly covered in clouds due to a hyperactive atmosphere.

Just some other things I thought to put out there.

A good thread to read through in relation to gas giants, I agree with it. Though,while intelligent life may be extremely hard to form on a gas giant, it still has a possibility, and when considering the whole "Forest of Floating Trees" idea that me and Narotiza had, it would probably be possible to make a wood/Stone Age civilization. And of course there's also the idea of a civilization extremely resilient to pressure living on the "surface" of a gas giant world, the cores metals avalible to them.

I really hope I'm not accidently creating "Underwater Civilizations" 2 electric boogaloo

Thanks, and that's a good point, though bone-based technology might also be possible, depending on game limitations/in-game evolution.

I remember seeing a documentary about that. Flora would also be black to absorb more energy. This would be prevalent in an older star who's color is red and is emitting less light, Like Gliese 581. I don't remember the particular doc I watched but that's really all I remembered from it too.

So the thing about Silicon is that it doesn't bond as well as carbon. While it's still pretty good, it just isn't all that electronegative relative to its more popular cousin, and chemists aren't convinced that it could bond to form all the compounds needed for life.

Now in terms of non-Lawk, I'm convinced it could form very simple structures that behave like primitive life. I imagine it as a sort of viral clay.

Another nifty result of life on radioactive worlds is their unique incentive to either learn to cope with negative mutations or figure out how to avoid them, either of which would be nifty if not necessarily macroscopically visible.

Maybe like HeLa Cells, mutant cancers could become independent organisms. Or maybe the healing process of mutations are just like getting a cut or a scratch.
