So I was thinking.. I don't know if this is still planned for the game but I remember ages ago that it was mentioned that you could play as an animal while another species is building it's civilization. I was curious.. If you play as an aquatic creature and the sentient race decides "Huh, we should do huge mining operations in this ocean or we need to build a massive dam here!" would that affect your species? Perhaps the mining operations would cause oil or other chemicals to leak out, and the Dam could damage your ecosystem? I don't know if these are going to be implemented like I said before but I was just very curious about this!

Sure, if we do include civilisations building alongside your species, that is. The actions of civilisations and even other animals can affect the planetary ecosystem. However, the examples you gave may be too specific, although we don't know exactly what we will be doing at that point. But on a larger scale, increased use of the ocean as a dump could lead to increased toxicity levels or something, but this example may not be definite.

The problem that always crops up is that you'll be playing the life of one organism over, say, about a year of its life; and after you go into the editor, you'll come out a few million years later. It would always be far more likely that a civilization would grow and collapse (or go off to the stars) in those few million years rather than them being around and doing stuff when you're actually piloting a creature around.
So maybe you could be an aquatic creature that spends a round living in an ocean that is recovering from the pollution of a civilization that's been dead for a few hundred millennia -- that would just be a special type of disaster much like an asteroid strike or nearby supernova.

Ah yeah that's true. It may be too complex for the game to handle that. Though as a Civilization it would be cool if you could choose to get rid of waste that way but it would have certain pros and cons to it. And I had not even thought that the game goes over millions of years. I don't know how I forgot about that aspect! Thank you both for the responses!
