I haven't heard much about the design of the game. We need to find the sweet spot that could potential make Thrive the most beautiful game ever(aesthetically). Spore had that cartoon design that was meant for kids. Thrive is for a larger audience obviously, so it's a given that all things neotonized will be discarded. However, realistic designs can be outrageously boring. And can be hard on most systems. So, let's look at the gaming industry's more recent failures for some insight. No Man's Sky had a surprisingly wonderful low-poly universe that wasn't too realistic, but still real enough to make it "life-like". They also had, in my opinion, the greatest color palette ever! Basically, NMS was pretty much a source of wallpapers is what I'm getting at. So, why can't we sacrifice a few tidbits of realism and details and morph it into some way to make it artistic. This will save a computer from crashing, and can give a neat outlook on what people will think of when they think of Thrive.

I think this is a good idea. NMS graphics will look great in 10 years as well . A "realistic" graphic from 2006 looks pretty ugly now . And the development of thrive will take at least 10 years , I guess . Imagine if they finished space stage and the aware stage just looks belgiuming ugly

We need a constant "It looks real enough, but not too real where it might look bad in the future" So bassicly we would need something sorta like... "Realistic" but also good enough to be future proof? So something like... Perhaps Metroid Prime/Prime 2? Those graphics still hold up and they are "Realistic".

Exactly. Most games made for details and textures can age. Some age well, others not so well. If we give less detail on the design, we can use it to make it look "modern" and have extra space for more things like better AI, and more parts to be able to use.

I'm not sure what to really compare that to model wise, any image on what something like that would look like?

I can't really explain. The best idea I can think of is low-poly art. It's just, if you look at the 1996 Lara Croft, did her character model age well? Did she look like something that would be top of the line today? Not really. She was given "realistic" textures with minimal poly count. Now look at Minecraft. It started off with blocks. And the fact that blocks is the biggest characteristic of Minecraft, then they didn't have to impress anyone in the first place. It's good as it is. The fact that they gave up realism to take up game space allowed them to do so much more with the game.
In other words, if we ditch ultra high texturing and ultra high poly count, but keep it at just the right amount where it can still look functional, people will play it. Some actually like the simplicity, somehow, like in No Man's Sky, the graphics(in the trailer)were real enough to look good, but the style made it different.
I know it's hard for me to explain, but in short, should we devote so much potential freedom and gameplay for ultra high graphics like The Last of Us?
