So I was thinking about mass extinction events on earth and I thought maybe they could be put into thrive. Things that could trigger them might be a drastic change in oxygen levels (like the great oxygenation event), a collapse of the food chain, meteors, etc. I'm also trying to figure out how to make it fair so your species doesn't just randomly die, because that's nothing but frustrating. Maybe adding a warning would help.

So, this is something which has been discussed numerous times before and is definitely going to be a part of Thrive. Think of how much mass extinction events have affected Earth's natural past. We plan to include just about any natural disaster that can occur and I personally think the challenge of trying to survive these events could be a lot of fun and will keep players on their toes. Having said that, some may find it annoying, so a large part of the options is going to be the ability to select which disasters you want to be able to occur, and at what frequency.

Maybe not giant face specifically but advanced alien race destroying you is a classic disaster for a species which really should be represented.
