I can't recall if this was covered on the original forums (which I helped derail; sorry about that ), but are the editors going to be available to play around with as they're unlocked, like in Spore, or just in their respective stages? If this was covered on the original forum, please link to it.

Yep, with no Mutation Point restrictions. If it's doable, I think it should be possible to create a creature in free edit mode and load it into the editor when you're playing the game, but only if you have enough Mutation Points required to cover the differences between your current creature and the saved creature. I've always wanted that loading sort-of thing in spore, and I'm pleased it's coming in Thrive.
