I was wondering if there would be an option for your species to go "in" (Download consciousness on a super computer and build a virtual world in there) rather than going "out" (Leaving the solar system and colonizing other star systems). If it is an option, how would an ascension stage work? Would they simply enter the sandbox by being in the computer? Or would you still have to figure out how to create a computer system that has to maintain itself until the end of time? I feel like this is important, since this is a question our species is asking about ourselves. Is it even worth it to go to space if we could have a swell time inside a virtual world, and not have to worry about health, boredom, pain, or death?

This is a really cool idea. However I think it makes more sense as a technology inside the space stage rather than a stage on it's own. The problem with being able to create anything is no programmer can program it

I guess it could be a cheap way to win the game hahaha
EDIT: Actually there was this game called SOMA where the last of humanity was stuck in a research station under the sea (the surface dwellers were wiped out) and the end goal of the game was to upload your consciousness into a supercomputer and launch it into space to live out the rest of eternity in peace.
Perhaps if your total population falls to critical levels this could be a quick/bittersweet way to end the game and still win?

The only issue I see is that while your species is in the computer, the computer would still be a tangible object floating in space. What if your computer gets destroyed? Would you just have to make sure your system could defend itself? What would happen if the computer was destroyed? Is it just game over?
PS. I saw a let's play of SOMA, pretty cool looking game!
