Something that'sĀ been in the back of my mind for a while is if Thrive would feature a consciousness measurement or not, will it? As in, getting closer to sapience? I feel like it'd make sense for "nervous complexity" to be quantifiable. That way, when the player's organism reaches a neural threshold (like a certain brain size), they'd get to proceed to the Awakening Stage.

Oh, no. Consciousness as in means of incapacitation, rendering something unconscious to put it in a defenseless, helpless state.

Oh, no. Consciousness as in means of incapacitation, rendering something unconscious to put it in a defenseless, helpless state. Like with blunt trauma and/or paralyzing venom? I guess it could go for both. The former would have to involve enough force go wherever the brain is (Dwarf Fortress pretty much nailed that), the latter would be determined by the player's circulatory system and metabolic rate (kind of like how tranqs aren't as quick for crocodiles as they are for elephants).

Exactly! I love incapacitation mechanics in games, it feels good to leave an enemy incapacitated rather than killing it outright, in my opinion.

Well, if we are going to track damage for each limb like has been discussed (although obviously is not definite) then I don't see why we can do the same for the head and just say when a certain amount of damage is taken by the head, the creature loses consciousness. With venom I don't think it is neccessary to target the head.

Another way something could lose consciousness is blood loss.
Maybe pain could also?

Another way something could lose consciousness is blood loss. Maybe pain could also? Welcome to the forums, and blood loss making incapacitation would be checking if the brain has ample blood, or just checking the entire body's blood supply and pooling a threshold.
