Perhaps we can just use the convention of picking latin names and just adding prefixes and suffixes? Maybe we could have community suggestions but I think it would turn into a bunch of irrelevant names that ruins the game's "authentic feel". Perhaps we can pick a select few community suggestions - through some sort of contest - and have those in the game?

PENGAS
Because its what the Prophesy said...
But for a more proffesional version of this...
Pengasinus Erectus...
But for something professional that is nothing to do with this...
Peligrosium Forma (Which comes from the spanish words forma peligrosa which means dangerous form... which still is kinda related to pengas...)

Why do we need a species name generator at all? Can't we just have them prancing about with no name to speak of until the layer comes across them and gives them their own name.

It could be mainly for giving the NPCs an internal name, and not have every org called "Creature". I'd have just one latin/greek name for the species duplicated, until the species split. Example: Toxin Predator could be Toxicus toxicus, but if it split into one that had a pilus instead, it could be Toxicus cuspis. If there were competition for the role of toxic predator, then why not Venenum venenum? Et cetera. btw I'm just copying and pasting from Google translate

But isn't it so much harder to create a system for naming procedurally generated creatures than just to leave it blank at first and allow the player to create the name? What would you really lose? You could still name them Toxicus Toxicus if you liked and the game wouldn't have to figure out names for every creature, some you might not ever meet.

Welp heres how it could work... species wont have names... the only way they can have names is if a sentient species discovers them and names them... think NMS... and for autogenerated ones would be sentient species and species who were discovered by another species...

I don't want my Sporepedia Thrive Content Library clogged with a bunch of "Organism" from gameplay.

I think what is meant is that even if you manage to dig up an organism, then there you will also be able to name it, kinda like how name our species after we discover them, we don't really have premade names, only the sets. Also I thought the fossilization idea was mainly pertained to your own species and its ancestors?

I agree Skyguy. Also, there was talk that the game can randomly "fossilise" species you've never met, just to give you, I don't know, an immersive world. That's on top of your species and ancestors and the creatures you discover. But the random saving wouldn't happen to often because memory space is a thing.

True, I don't see the problem in having the player have the choice to name the species, and if you can't come up with a name then a randomized that kinda just attached two random words together maybe?

Menu/Settings/GameplayOptions
Auto Generate Names [On] [Off]

Then why should you be able to turn it on/off? That should always be on, I think...
