Wait will the game still be a downloadable exe if it goes on steam because I don't have steam... It would still be a downloadable game on Steam, yes.
In fact that's how pretty much all games on Steam work: no physical copies, all digital.
As for monetary issues, the only money that Steam will ask of the developers is the initial, one time 70 US dollars that is necessary to get this game on Greenlight.
Which is something that crowd funding can easily pull off.
Once on Greenlight, all the game would need then is enough votes for it to be released on Steam.
But as me and wolfmoon have said, it's best to wait until there's a much more complete game out with more stages ready before going through with Steam.

Yeah, I was just thinking outside the box there. If it's not in the final game, it would at least be an interesting fan made mod.

Basically, a horizontal gene transfer allows an embryo to take traits from its parents as it develops. When it is born, it has traits that it inherited from its parents.
Why create this thread? Because the Xenomorph from the Alien films shows this trait when it develops inside a host.
When the Alien grows up, it takes on traits and abilities that its host has.
For example, if it impregnates a Predator, it grows up and gets extra mandibles, dreadlocks and is bigger and stronger than its Predator host.
I am just wondering that if the player creates a parasitic creature that's like the Xenomorph, would a horizontal gene transfer be possible to implement, with the player controlled creature choosing which traits to inherit, and NPCs of the same species getting random genetic traits?
As I have stated before in my previous threads, if the mods feel the need to close this thread then go right ahead and close it.

It wouldn't even need to be finished. It could just be released under early access until it is complete. While that may be true, people would want to see a playable and aesthetically presentable version out if it's to be an early access game.
Edit: One question remains, though: if it were to go on Greenlight, who would pay the $70 fee to put it on Greenlight? If not the developers, then it may have to be one of the fans.

I have returned from the grave with another poll - this time regarding donations.
I apologize if this is in the wrong area, but I feel as if the issue needs to be addressed.
At the pace that Thrive is currently going, we won't see a complete finalized game until 2030s, or 2040s.
Setting up donations like on patreon or some other funding site could bring income to Thrive for hiring actual professionals to work on the game full time, and thus speed up development.
Not to mention it could get this game on Steam more easily.
Also, people would get a better quality product out there.
I just want to see the community's views on donations.
Why? Because there exists a thread on reddit that was made by one of the developers, asking for the community's opinions of donations.
If the mods feel as if there's something wrong with this thread, then they can close it.

Hello Thrive community.
I did not know where to put this thread and I sincerely apologize if this is the wrong section.
Anyway, I thought that when Thrive is all finished up in the next several years, would people want to release this game on Steam?
There are benefits of releasing on Steam, including protection from viruses, release of developer tools to create mods, and easier access to the game.
The costs being that a Steam workshop might not work since they cost money and I'm not sure if the developers of Thrive would want to spend a mere $70 to get this game on Greenlight.
So, I've set up a poll to see people's opinions on this matter.
EDIT: We already have a Steam group, so that's why I set up the poll.

And the X-ray system could theoretically work with inflicting extra damage, but more like in the style of Dying Light since when playing as a creature, you're trying to attack enemies more efficiently.
Just my few cents.

Workshops on Steam cost money for Valve. However, redwatt is right in the sense that many free to play games have been released onto Steam. The initial payment for getting a concept greenlit on Steam is, I believe, about 70 US dollars or so. As for modding on Steam, the developers of Thrive could give the players the developer tools on Steam as well, if my memory serves me well.
But as seregon said, this is far further down the road.

I, for one, like this system of having blunt and piercing damage. Might I also suggest something like Mortal Kombat X and Dying Light's X-ray systems? In both of those games you would inflict serious damage to the enemy, but you would momentarily see your enemy's organs and bones being crushed, snapped or otherwise damaged.
Perhaps something similar could be done with Thrive's multicellular organisms and critical hits, if critical hits were to ever appear in Thrive.
One last note, regarding damage to other organisms, I'd like to see 2 things: an injury system similar to Left 4 Dead, and a dismemberment engine so that the players can optionally tear other organisms body parts off, like heads or limbs, etc. Reason why I want this is because it mirrors real life. In nature, animals get ripped apart all the time. However, I'd much prefer it to be optional, so that those who don't want this can turn it off.
