My morning class was cancelled, so here it is:
Round 24:
Event: +3’s all around!
Isn’t Nastina generous?!
SkyGuy98: (Passive Glycovore) (Hydrothermal Vents)
Mutation: Mitochondria (6 + 3 = 7, 2 excess) [super mutation]
Description: This species has developed a symbiotic relationship with small aerobic bacteria around the vents. These bacteria are incredibly beneficial, offering massive quantities of ATP per glucose molecule they’re supplied with. This largely makes up for the deficiencies caused by the last symbiont taken in, although that should ideally be fixed at some point.
Previous Mutations:
Chloroplasts {2} (selfish little moochers)
Fix Chloroplasts {2} (even selfisher moochers)
Conservation Status: EN
Robotranicrex: (Secondary Consumer [carnivore]) (Coral Reef)
Mutation: Odorant Detectors (7 + 3 = 7, 3 excess) [super mutation]
Description: D. roborexi has developed proteins on the membranes of its forward cells that can make tight bonds to specific chemicals in the water. Once bound, signals are sent to the species’ nerve cluster that indicate the sort of chemicals present in the environment nearby. This species odorant detectors are numerous, and able to recognize thousands of unique chemical smells, although further refinement could improve the sensitivity range over which these cells work. This is a powerful tool in the species’ search for prey.

Mutation: Lateral Line Odorant Detectors (7) [super mutation]
R: Fix Rupturing Hydrogen Sac (5 + 3 = 6, 2 excess) [better than requested]
Description: S. obscurus has developed odorant detecting cells along its lateral lines, which allow it a diverse range of compound detection in the thousands. While refinement could make the system more sensitive, it is for now sufficient to find prey, and is a boon to this species’ efforts at survival. Additionally, this species has managed to support its hydrogen sac with bracing proteins, preventing its frequent rupture. This has led to the species floating near the top of the water as hydrogen is an extremely light gas. When bitten (a very rare occurrence, since this species has no naturally occurring predators), the gas combusts with the assistance of the electrolyzing organ.

Bigyihsuan: (Secondary Consumer [omnivore]/Primary Producer [photoautotroph]) (Continental Shelf to Surface Waters)
Mutation: Odorant Detectors (2 + 3 = 5) [as requested]
R: Unknown’s Electrolysis (2) [failure]
Description: S. hsuani has developed odorant detecting molecules on its forward cells, much like D. roborexi, however these molecules are fairly limited in their scope, detecting only a few hundred unique molecules in the water. While having a useful mutation, this species is beginning to lose out to other predators with keener senses of smell.

R: Fix Filter Mouth (3) [no effect]
Description: I. atroxi has developed a fairly advanced respiratory system, and the first of its kind. On either side of its body, large gill branches extend into the water, collecting oxygen and circulating it through the blood stream. This allows for much greater size, and a more active lifestyle.

Evolution4Weak: (Passive Thermosynthesizer) (Hydrothermal Vents)
Mutation: Signal Molecules (2 + 3 =5 ) [better than requested]
R: Anti-Freeze Proteins (3) [no effect]
Description: M. eniminfirmus has developed signaling molecules that allow it to coordinate between members of its species. This means that it is able to congregate in clumps, although with no real means of predation, and no real means of locomotion, this adaptation means little in the way of usefulness and is more of an expensive protein usage. It has failed to develop anti-freeze proteins, but this does not matter much at the vents. If it can develop binding proteins, it can make the jump to multicellular.
