Round 23:
Event: Blood on the Ice
Global temperatures are stabilizing. Things are still cold, but species prepared for the environment are able to cope. Carbon Dioxide and Methane produced by the planet’s life are beginning to re-supply the atmosphere, and a basic ozone layer is on its way to being re-established.
SkyGuy98: (Passive Glycovore) (Hydrothermal Vents)
Mutation: Mitochondria (3) [no effect]
Description: P. cieloviri has not changed significantly.
Previous Mutations:
Chloroplasts {2} (selfish little moochers)
Fix Chloroplasts {2} (even selfisher moochers)
Conservation Status: CR
Robotranicrex: (Secondary Consumer [carnivore]) (Coral Reef)
Mutation: Eyes (5 + 1 = 6 Most Fit) [better than requested]
Description: D. roborexi has jumped ahead several evolutionary steps. It has developed light sensitive opsins, and collected them into eyespots on its head. While these cannot distinguish color or focus particularly well, they put its visual acuity only slightly behind that of its primary competitor, S. hsuani.

Conservation Status: VU
Unknown: (Secondary Consumer [omnivore]/Primary Producer [photoautotroph]) (Continental Shelf to Surface Waters)
Mutation: Improved Electrolysis (5 + 1 = 6 Least Fit) [better than requested]
R: Lateral Lines (6) [better than requested]
Description: S. obscurus has streamlined its process of electrolysis. Water is now run over two electrodes that terminate the nerve endings in the organ. These electrodes produce hydrogen gas at high rates and use a fair bit less energy to do so than previous incarnations of the organ. Additionally, this species has developed lateral line nerves, which allow it to detect vibrations in the water around it. This particular lateral line set is highly sensitive.

Mutation: Arsenic Toxin Resistance (2) [success, total – 2]
R: Atrox’s Thermoreception (6) [success]
Description: S. hsuani has developed basic resistance to the toxin of its prey. Most specimens of I. atroxi, however, are escaping to the hydrothermal vents. The species’ has however gained the ability to sense temperature due to a fortunate capture of the former prey’s genetic information (let me know if you want to start heading back to the vents).

Atrox: (Primary Consumer [herbivore]) (Hydrothermal Vents)
Mutation: Filter Mouth (2) [slightly deleterious]
One Time: Fix Legs (7) [super mutation]
R: Arsenic Toxin (4) [success, total 16]
Description: I. atroxi’s legs are now more motile. They closely resemble the segmented legs of crabs, with the anti-parasite armor providing the support. With these legs (powerfully propelled by the species’ exceptional musculature), the creatures can scurry about the vents quickly and efficiently. A fibrous tissue is weaved over the opening to I. atroxi’s sac gut. It is a very effective straining implement, however it cannot open. Because of this, only small particles of food can enter into the animal’s digestive tract. Due to the microscopic nature of the animal’s quarry and its high abundance, this is only a minor problem. For now. Additionally, the potency of this species’ arsenic toxin has increased.

Mutation: Vertical Gene Transfer (5) [success]
Description: M. eniminfirmus has developed the capacity to trade genetic information with other members of its species. This is a highly valuable adaptation, as it will allow for a huge diversity of genetic templates going forward, and will likely increase the rate of this species’ evolution.
