On the top of my head: Air/Water units for birds/anphibians Suicide units for hiveminds or very disciplined societies Units with confusing chemical signals against hiveminds Mounted units Tribemen/Militia/Rebels/Levies when aplicable
I'm also guessing pilots (or maybe just call them vehicles) and AI vehicles (Ya know, robots n stuff) And of course the basic ranged and melee groups Maybe a special sabotage group (and also maybe a kind of area attack group (rocket launchers n stuff))

It would probably depend on how your species evolves. Got big muscles? Then we have chargers and other brawly big boy things. Got big brains? Let's invent this shooty thing which shoots sharp things and have ranged things. It's just whatever's convenient.

I think a system where the player creates the units would be good. The player can give the unit weapons and equipment(possibly giving certain soldiers in the unit special weapons),he could sort he units size(up to a limit) and it's level of training(from barely knowing how to use a rifle to spec ops levels of training)
