A lot of animals in our world shed, whether it be shedding skin, hair or various other things. I assume Thrive will have seasons, so say you have a world that goes from warm to cold with the season, your organism could have some sort of Caste/Behavior that causes it to grow hair/shed hair. If you were a reptile, you could shed your skin if you needed to or maybe even shed a whole body part (think lizard tails).
Molting could be the equivalent of shedding for invertebrates, so if your organism grows to a certain size but their skin does not grow with it, you could molt out of the old skin and grow a new layer that would expand with you. Maybe this could even be an option for vertebrates?

I love including all this in but I'm trying to think of what this feature would add to the game. Would there be an advantage in some way for doing this?

I love including all this in but I'm trying to think of what this feature would add to the game. Would there be an advantage in some way for doing this? In the case of shedding, say your planet starts getting warmer, if you shed fur/scales/whatever your organism's skin has on it, you lower the risk of overheating. With body parts like tails, if it gets caught in a organism's mouth or something else, you could detach it and continue to run away. For molting, perhaps it would help speed up growth and/or be part of your organism's life cycle? (I just kinda wanted this in for the sake of realism, it was a feature I kinda wanted in Spore so that making reptilian, insectoid and mammalian creatures had a more realistic feel to it)

I like realism too, I just wondered if you had an idea for what this would add to the game.
I guess the first one would work if we include body heat and overheating.

You could molt ur shells and then use them to build nests... and this would also be another way for a sentient species to get chitin without having to kill things.... you cpuld also have a symbiosis in which the shells u molt are the only source of food for a neighboring species and in return that species is your lunch lol

In arthropods e.g spiders, your growth could be halted until you molt.

It could simply be a life cycle change, it's mainly due to that exoskeletons require molting to grow. Also: there is no plan to truly conform to Earth classifications, one particularly good example is the mobile plant possible in the current and all planned versions.
