How exactly is the multi-cellular stage going to work in terms of the colony itself, from a gameplay perspective? I read somewhere on one of Thrive's websites, I think the wiki, that there would be two things necessary to keep a colony to stick together, the first being the agent to stick to other cells, and the second a signal agent to keep the cells organized, instead of 'swimming' in their own direction and breaking off. Is that the plan still?
Also, for larger colonies, will the signal diminish in strength the farther it is from the source cell, meaning that it would need to have more than one signal cell to keep the whole colony together? If so, would that mean the colony would have multiple 'brains,' and some means of controlling all of them be needed, or would the only original 'signal cell' be the brain?

We don't really know yet. That stuff you saw on the wiki would be the basic beginnings of a colony -- when there isn't much to the colony other than "cells which stick together mostly". A big part of developing that part of the game will be figuring out mechanics to represent the increasing scale and complexity of life in that transition. I have a few ideas for what can happen once you've already evolved to the point of being a blob a few millimeters in size, but there's a world of stuff before that. Cell differentiation, formation of tissues, development of a germ line, etc. It'll be very exciting once we're there, but until then feel free to speculate right here !

I think the idea of signals to coordinate the colony could be developed further than just a 'keep the colony together' kind of thing, which is why I asked what was planned. If it is at all possible, perhaps more than one signal agent could be used, say for controlling actions in unison throughout all cells in a colony? Perhaps a signal for triggering all toxin vacuoles, and until that signal is present in the colony, the AI controls it for you, perhaps not in the way the player may desire? That would definitely provide incentive to keep evolving...
This could eventually allow for a primitive nervous system, if 'brain' cells were added in addition to having the signals' range be limited. Maybe the 'brain' cells would each only tie in to one signal, and act as a control center for that function?
These kinds of things would be more mid- to late-game, of course, but could allow for some interesting options for progression, as well as another possible way to transition to the Aware stage, once a colony has enough brain cells to be considered a single organism, rather than a colony of cells...

I would imagine part of the progression in multicellular would include more complicated coordinated activity as more specialized cells evolve.
