I know the Microbe stage is planned to be 2D, with your microbe being able to move forward, backward, left and right. But shouldn't upward and downward movement also be considered? I heard somewhere that some microbes would swim downward when they sensed sunlight, thus protecting themselves from the harmful rays of the sun.
Perhaps pressing shift/space would cause the microbe to swim down/up? This would also allow the player to swim to biomes such as the Surface and the Deep Ocean in a single life - assuming no predators killed them of course.

I wonder if this would cause pbroblems with swimming up or down into predatory microbes and coming to a sudden death. Also it might cause AI microbes "appearing from nowhere" as they move up and down planes
How would you display a microbe above or below you?
- below could be a smaller unfocused version in the background but it you go reverse for above youll have anything above you block out your view

Things above you could be partially transparent so you could see through them.

Moving up and down would make some of the biomes that were suggested on the thread-whose-name- I-cannot-remember-but-involves-suggesting-biomes much easier to integrate into the game.

Another issue with incorporating a layer above the player is that TheCreator said that anything on that layer would be annoyingly zipping past the screen.

I would have made it so everything is full 3d, but that would mean changing all the current game, so it is not viable at this point.

I'll see if I can figure out how to put a parallax layer above the cells, then change the layer's texture to transparent microbes, and then see how that looks.
EDIT: Just thought of another problem: Compound Clouds. How will those work?

Here we are. The microbes in the upper layer (above) are transparent, and microbes close enough to the camera are invisible. Microbes in the back layer (below) are slightly unfocused. (or maybe just transparency would work?) The deepest ones are hidden.
In reality, the microbes would of course be more varied and move around and stuff.

Yeah I'm not sure about that :/ I find it a bit disturbing when you try to focus with other microbes passing in front of the camera or below you.

Do they make it difficult to focus on the microbes that are level with the player? What would you change? Thought of something for compound clouds: Perhaps they just remain the same as you ascend/descend? When you approach another biome that has different amounts compounds in it, the spawn rates of the clouds are gradually changed to match. This seems like it would work pretty well, assuming the transitions between biomes were large and smooth.

I made more videos More cells. This shows how I imagine layer-scrolling might work. The flat pieces of glass represent the parallax bubbles. Notice how they never go above the player's cell, and how the base (blue floor) doesn't move at all.

What th— that looks amazing @narotiza! I'm not so sure about actually moving through the layers, but there should definitely be unfocused, maybe darker, and semi-transparent microbes swimming beneath the player.

I think that being able to swim up and down will make the game a bit more realistic. (Plus, biomes like the Surface and Deep Sea will be easily accessible)

I agree with being able to move between biomes, but I think it should be handled by evolving different tolerances to pressures, in my opinion.
