I have a couple of languages I am half working on, apparently I'm rather good at it. Is there going to be written and spoken language, or is that too far off? And if there is, will it be nonsense like Spore and the Sims? Or, can I begin a sixth language?

I think it would be too demanding to try and simulate new languages for species. Although I haven't really checked yet, I'd assume languages would be random noise and symbols.

I would like it if your own species would always talk english. Makes gameplay a lot easier.

I would like it if your own species would always talk english. Makes gameplay a lot easier. Yeah perhaps, but I feel this raises more problems than just to have gibberish. For example, we'd have to record loads of phrases to be said in the game. Also, I feel like we'd need someone to be able to give professional voice acting, which may be difficult to find, especially for free, if we continue on that path. Furthermore, we'd have to do it for several different languages, compared to doing it just the once for gibberish.

We could just record someone making sneaky references and then use randomizing software to mesh them into sentences for atmosphere.
Ex:
Recorded line: I hate these Belgiuming Uetikos *randomize for flare* Output; Giumbeltik ingosuet thesehate I

I think it would be a bit odd to keep hearing garbled half-English to create atmosphere, especially when the phrase would only make sense to people who are close to the development of the game. I just think it would be simpler to have gibberish. It's not like plenty of other games don't do it, and people wouldn't criticise us for it.

I'm fairly certain Mcderp was joking. At any rate, we probably won't go any further than gibberish animal-like babbling, just because anything more would require too much effort for very little gameplay value.

Long live Easter eggs! At any rate, I see your point and I admit that it's fairly well the most logical option . And I certainly don;t think there would be any detractors.

Would there be a written format of the language?

Would there be a written format of the language? If you refer to my concept, I do not believe it will be implemented. Regardless, yes there would be phonetic as well as hieroglyphic or pictographic versions of any language I may make in regards to this game, whether they are officially endorsed is another issue (I can post my languages, or you can find my current one at my website of megaverseblog.wordpress.com )

When this was discussed in the old forum, I think we decided on having images / English to indicate spoken ideas, and potentially symbols / English on houses & tech.
Creating any sort of alien language is really only an extra for once the core gameplay is complete, and since we'll be using stock phrases / gibberish (our AI wont be passing the turing test), it will just be a surface-level feature.
English voice acting would be out of place, alien sound effects would be doable.

(sorry if this is to oftopic or seems egocentric in any way that's not my intention) I was asleep xD But, basically, make sure you follow some sort of guidelines. Right now I am making a language for my Talvatha (Celtic-Anglo inspired) and I am therefore using words etc that one might find in German, Old English and Celtic. (Ce being ke, W being V etc) This merely makes it easier on you as the creator and easier on the reader. My last language was known as "Primnaldas" and that was quite alien due to the degree of synthetic structure I used in it. However, up to your own tastes, really...

I just sat down one day and decided to make an Orc language (Gir Largat) and that was just a small vocab language. Then came along Drackon Motvil (Dragon Tongue) and that got upwards of 2k words, using Latin alphabet. Then I went onto Luxen and that is over 2000 words long and pure hieroglyphic. And then Primnaldas which is smaller than the previous two. And now Talvatha. Basically all on a whim xD Also, yw.

(Quotes aren't working for me, nor do I know how to tag, ugh) It might belong in ideas, though I started it due to the mention of linguistics in this board area. Check which languages out? o.o

We can leave it here: linguistics could be considered a science.

StealthStyleL right, thank you. Aquos only one language is there, and it isn't my updated version. I am planning on posting Motvil, Largat (cripes, I can't remember if that's the proper spelling, been a long time) and Primnaldas to that site, but they have so many words...
