Elemental Fluorine tends to set fire to surrounding objects. It's actually quite horrible...

But there are other options, I'm sure. Water vapor for instance, or ammonia. Both heavier than air, but can be held safely in moderate quantities (both uncolored, so the ghost could still be clear-to-milky as well).

Quick google search says that water vapor is in fact lighter than air. So I guess that leaves ammonia. Obvious thing that hasn't been discussed yet: The skin and muscles of this specter could be translucent. This would leave the bones visible, which I personally think would look kind of cool. It could also be partially translucent and have a white-ish color. Milky, as you said. I'm not sure which one would be better though... EDIT: Cool shrimp with transparent muscles

First off (and most important) that shrimp is fantastic. Secondly, sorry about the vapor density (I'm on a roll, misinformation wise). Lastly, bones composed of a non-apatite mineral could be tailored to most any color desired, before I suggest some, I will take time to thoroughly research, becuase drawing from personal experience hasn't worked out well for me today

I'm not personally knowledgeable on non-apatite based mineral alternatives to bone, but I do know that Hydroxylapatite can be anywhere from a colorless to white, gray, yellow, or even a yellowish green.
It sounds like you might like the colorless variant?

Most definitely! Independent research was derailed by necessary lecture research, so I will get back with that as well.

I did my own research on the vacuum flotation mechanism.
We completely forgot to take into account the fact that these float sacs would have to be made of an extremely durable and strong material (i.e. not flesh) in order to avoid implosion. Apart from that it also seems that a vacuum would only be 14% more efficient than hydrogen, which is not bad... but it's not particularly great either, is it?
It seems that unless these ghosts are massive and/or able to withstand immense amounts of pressure, floating isn't really an option...
Damn.

Mechanical action? Small wings hidden inside their flowing outer skin?

Wings have to be a certain size to generate lift no? Where would they be on the body?

I had the thought that there could be an exterior arrangement of thin translucent fibers, and on the inside maybe there could be something similar to the system in the wheels thread, whereby blood powers a helicopter like set of boney blades that generate lift similar to a quadcopter drone. Yeah, nay?

hmm...An internal turbine you mean?
EDIT: You said external whoops. But there could be an internal turbine like structure I guess which can produce some lift... Some air can come out of some orifices pushing it off the ground constantly.

No yeah, you were right, the turbine is inside, the external stuff is just referencing whatever we're constructing the ghost's "skin" of. Sorry, I realize I wasn't super clear.

Been awhile since I've done a proper diagram. Anyway, this fleshes out my idea. As you can see the ghost's external appearance is created by fibers that can act as whatever we need (gas exchange, flexible appendages, etc.). The inner workings are closely organized, with the heart supplying highly pressurized blood to a rotary "wing" that acts like the wheels in the "Wheels" thread. Scaled up, it could potentially produce acceptable lift. The ghost would need to eat a lot though, and weigh very little. Supplemented by light gases (i.e. Hydrogen) this could keep it airborne.

Eat a lot and weigh a little? Hmmm seems difficult...
Im assuming this kind of ghost would be more similar in appearance to a stereotypical sheet ghost?

The design of the exterior was mostly a result of my laziness and poor art skills, it could be theoretically tailored to whatever is so desired, I was simply offering the most basic idea of a layout. In terms of eating a lot, if it were suplemented with hydrogen, etc. then it wouldn't need to generate as much thrust and could then eat less.

Great! It's nice to be back in the spec. evo. hang of things, I've been slipping lately! Also, thank you. It's the only art of which I am capable (well, the only pride-worthy art of which I am capable).
Edit: original post was really egocentric, so I should add: Excellent insight on the problems with my initial model Atrox
Edit 2: I realize that again this is marked by a tone of arrogance, to which I say: I am legitimately appreciative of your insights on the things that I just kind of blundered through as though Biology were a suggestion (not a rule) for me.
