I say eye (as in, that's my vote for evolution)! Also, thank you for the clarification!

You seize up again, and split in half once more. When it's over, your first response is to open you eye that you realize you didn't have before. You look over at your twin. It's gray, round, and slightly transparent. There is a small, beady eye upwards of its mouth.
You survey your surroundings. The one of your kind from earlier has grown an eye as well, oddly. The smaller creatures are tan, with two brown stripes down their backs, and are flat. The algae is a dark green.
Something new are creatures about three times your size. They are yellow, and have brown spines on their backs. They crawl at a pace slower than the small creatures, and they suck up any algae in their path. Their skin is noticeably thicker than yours.
At varying distances are large rocks that would probably help with seeing more. The sand curves upward far into the distance.
You have 1/3 health.
You have 1/3 stomach.
You have 0 MP.
New Mutations Unlocked:
Spines - 6 MP - Protective spines that hurt any creature that tries to attack you.
Thicken Skin - 4 MP - Thickens your skin. Provides a defensive boost against both foes and the environment, but makes it impossible to eat without a mouth (which you have).
Increase Mass - 4 MP - Increases your size. Has defensive bonuses, but makes crawling movements even slower.

Eat some more algae, to recover that stomach, then look in the sea to see if there's any aquatic life there for eating.

Also, don't forget the naming bonus. Of course, naming NPCs counts as a vote, but the suggestions on that thread that inspired this are pretty interesting.

You ignore the Twerpi (+2 MP) and Doofapples (+2 MP) for now, more interested in regaining mass after that eye-growing stunt. Now that you can see, the patches of algae aren't so common as you thought with all the Doofapples eating the ground clean. Somehow, the Twerpi are finding good bits the Doofapples missed. Still, the patch you're at hasn't been touched yet, so you nibble off a whole splotch (+4 MP).
You have 3/3 health.
You have 3/3 stomach.
You have 8 MP.
Edit: Forgot about naming bonus.

Growing in size would most likely be a hindrance, what with being slow and all. The Twerpi must have a way of discerning the location of their food. Therefore, I suggest we evolve a tail, move towards the nearest twerpi and... "sample" it.
Or become larger and continually use our untouched patch of greeny goodness to evolve. Either way
I vote for the first method

Forgot about the Mutation Point bonus for naming critters... Went and put that in.
So 4 points for naming 2 critters, gives you a pool of 8 to play with.

Let's get a tail, grow thicker skin, and go "visit" a twerpi (they're muscling in on our turf).

Spines, a tail, and lets also specialize carnivorous enzymes. Guys let's be omnivores.

Another note: Adding another enzyme specialization costs 10 MP, and you can only specialize in two. Edit: Aquos I haven't added vertebra as an option yet. You're going to have to unlock it by finding a creature with one. Edit 2: Disregard that I doesn't knowed how to do the contexts!
