I talked about it on the discord and got a bit fed up on how I didn't just suddenly have a genius creature idea in my head, so I decided to make some prompt questions you can answer to help flesh out a species and get some lore on them. You can post your stuff here, add more prompts, I dunno.
Habitat -
What terrain did your species evolve on?
What's the climate of their origin region, and how frequently does it experience bad weather, if it does experience bad weather what kind is it?
How dense is the foliage, and what is the dominant type of plant in the area?
Are there any significant land features?
How much sunlight enters the planet's atmosphere, if any does, and how long is the day/night cycle if it's consistent.
What is the dominant form of life in the region, and how abundant is it?
Creature -
What is your species' diet, how did that shape their physiology?
What is your species' primary mode of motion, and is it capable of any others as well?
If you had to give a general description of the creature's form/shape what would it be?
How many limbs and appendages does your creature possess.
What kind of skin does your creature have?
What ecological niche did your species evolve to fill, and to a lesser extent what is there place and its solidity in the food chain?
When confronted how did your species deal with it, if they evaded or avoided confrontation did they do so with a specific feature of the terrain or with an evolved feature of their body?
How does your species reproduce, if they mate what is their ritual and do they partner for life?
Does your species stay in one location over the course of their lives, migrate frequently, or experience one giant migration?
How long does your species live for, and how do they change over time beyond just maturing. Do they stagnate in size or grow larger until death.
What is your species' primary form of defending itself, and if applicable what is its primary form of attacking others.
If you had to pick three of the most prominent behaviors your species exhibits (such as swarming, pack, solitary, stalking, etc) what would they be in no particular order?
What are the three most prominent forms of interactions with other creatures in its environment, and what's its relationship with these creatures? (Predator, prey, symbiotic, etc)
Culture -
How has your species behavior over time evolved in regards to its initial role in the ecosystem?
How does your creature react to others of its species, if it forms communities how many of them make up one of these groups?
How does your creature react to the wildlife, has it begun domestication and if so what roles did it prioritize for this (hunting, labor/lifting, scavenging, etc)
How has the environment it involved with impacted the creature's attitude and philosophy?
What kind of belief system does your creature possess, and what kind of creation myths/explanations does it feature, if applicable how did these views change over time?
What does your creature prioritize most, material or not (wealth, knowledge, spiritualism, food, etc)
How advanced is your creature's society and what is the relative level of technology it's at?
Does your creature communicate through word, pictures, smells, lights, or something else entirely? Is it a universal language between the species or have divergent dialects evolved?
...
That's all I've got so far
