Surely another one of these wouldn't hurt?
Old-timers probably know what I'm talking about, but for everyone else, here's a rundown:
Evolution
Every turn, you request a mutation for your species to go through. These will be subject to a "dice roll" (random number from 1 to 6), with the results being as follows:
1: The mutation fails, and a negative effect takes its place.
2, 3: The mutation fails.
4, 5: The mutation succeeds.
6+: The mutation succeeds, alongside a bonus.
In addition, evolving more advanced methods of gene transfer allows you to request a second mutation. There are two types, with their own roll systems:
Vertical Gene Transfer (transmission of genes between individuals for reproduction) works the same as usual mutation votes.
Horizontal Gene Transfer ("steal" a part from another species):
1,2,3: The mutation fails.
4,5,6: The mutation succeeds.
Conservation Status
"Conservation status" reflects how well your species is performing. If you find yourself in one of the lower statuses (other than extinction, of course), you can recover, but it might not be easy.
Least Concern: Your species is fine, and will probably stay that way barring an unforeseen negative occurrence.
Vulnerable: Your species isn't doing very well, and is at risk of population decline.
Endangered: Your species is losing numbers quickly.
Critically Endangered: Your species is on the verge of extinction.
Extinct: Your species has been wiped out. To continue playing, you can either take control of an NPC species, or branch off of one of your fellow players' species.
Events
Every fifth turn, an event will occur. These will test your ability to adapt to change. Much like evolution, events are subject to a dice roll:
1,2: This is a global event, impacting the entire planet.
3,4: This is a widespread event, affecting an entire continent and/or ocean.
5,6: This is a regional event, limited to a particular area on the planet.
In addition to running this thread, I'll see if I can't keep a wiki article up-to-date.
----------
Round 0
In a remote corner of a typical spiral galaxy, a precious phenomenon has emerged on a small planet: life. Its atmosphere has been converted from toxic to oxygenated by photosynthetic bacteria, opening the way for more complex organisms within its churning oceans.
One species, above all, warrants mention: Thrivum proteus, which consists of only one cell, with a nucleus at its center. Despite its simplicity, its descendants are poised to inherit this planet.
If you want to join, just type up a post saying you're joining, and state your mutation which you'll branch off of Thrivum proteus with.
