For the sake of things such as being uplifted (if we're even doing that lol i'm hilariously out of touch on this games design are there any public design docs please?) we would need to simulate actual galactic events while you're just multicellular and upwards. While this would allow for really interesting events like the aforementioned uplifting, invasions or just hyper-advanced civs using your planet as a battlefield and belgiuming it to shreds, it also sounds really tough on the actual game and corners would need to be cut for this to work.
Assuming this is a planned feature (what isn't lol) how would it actually be implemented and what corners would need to be cut?

I think the plan is that you can't be uplifted, only uplift other species. I'd guess other people can't colonize your planet either, just like spore. The problem are the timescales of each stage, if you had a sapient soecies on your planet and you were just aware, they would probably reach ascention way before you get into the awakening stage (in the odd case they didn't hunt you into extintion before that).

tfw underwater caveman 5ever What about the very early Space Stage, when you're just getting around to exploring your solar system? Wouldn't a warlike empire that happened to spawn in around you immediately invade?

Uplifting is basically just "Here, have every technology to get you to space, who needs all this 'planetary unification' and 'industrial revolution?'" and the aliens could also set you back to the stone age. So it would be best to have a game setting for alien interference amounts. Zero uplifting: Every empire follows the Prime Directive and won't touch your primitive space. You'll get less spiritualism. Some presence: You might see a spaceship in Aware stage, or attempt to take one down in industrial. They could fire a laser or something, or abduct, or just wander. Full Interference Allowed: You can be sent back to the Flintstones era because the Imperium of Rho decided you're on the Mostly Harmless hitlist, or elevated to near-ascension by the Treaii wannabes.
