In case you haven't been following the developer forums, we are getting a launcher for thrive. It's going to be released soon, so I wanted to ask people to test it before we post it everywhere. Downoad it here (Windows 32/64 and Linux builds are available). Check the thread about it here: forum.revolutionarygamesstudio.com/t/launcher/335/

why can't i open it it says it needs a default program assigned to it You need 7zip ( www.7-zip.org/) in order to unzip it. Or did you manage to unzip it already, and it's something else?

Which file are you running that gets this error? I'm guessing he's trying to open the zip, but he doesn't have 7zip installed so he gets that instead of being able to extract it.

He said it was something else though... Oh, right, I missed that post. Then I have no clue unless he can describe exactly when that error happens.

I think everyone's confused by assuming people know things they don't, so I'm going from the very beginning. Apologies if I've simplified things too much. RoboTrannic When you downloaded the launcher, what you got was a file called thrive-launcher-win32-x64.7z, correct? This is the folder people are referring to. It's not immediately obvious that it isn't a file. Download and install 7zip, then right click on thrive-launcher-win32-x64.7z and choose 7zip -> Extract files. That will give you the folder. Within that there's an application called thrive-launcher, which you need to run to make the launcher work. If you're still having problems after all that, then yes, that's a definite issue. Side note: we probably need to use regular zip files in future to prevent this sort of confusion.

Side note: we probably need to use regular zip files in future to prevent this sort of confusion. I've changed the executable name to "Thrive Launcher" in the latest versions (removed the dash '-' and capitalized). Also I used 7zip to get smaller archives (and I didn't realize there existed people who hadn't heard of 7z, or couldn't google can't find program error for .7z files). I just tested and .zip archives are 51% larger. So it definitely speeds up downloads. And if we have to host it ourselves, our server bandwidth usage. But, It wouldn't be too difficult to have both zip and 7zip archives available if this truly is a problem. Or maybe there's a tool for creating installers for people who like that sort of easy/automatic thing, but that won't be in the initial release.

Imporant rule; Never expect people to google things themselves
