What is Nature’s World?
Think of this game as a combination of Mitobox’s Ecosystem game ( thrivegame.freeforums.net/thread/78/ecosystem-rp-game ) and TheCreator’s Official Thrive Forum Game Competition ( thrivegame.freeforums.net/thread/110/official-thrive-forum-game-competition?page=1 ). I wanted to create a game where we create a realistic progression of a planet’s nature yet also play as the organisms that evolve. Thinking about it, it will be similar to a text-based version of Thrive. Your job, as the player, will be to ensure that the genes of your species survive and that the mutations you choose to evolve cause your species to thrive!
In more detail, Nature’s World will be a round-based game where you will submit your action votes to me, and I will roll dice to see how successful they are. You will play as an individual of your species, beginning from a basic eukaryotic cell; you must avoid becoming prey and find enough sustenance to survive and therefore reproduce. If you reproduce (don’t worry, no graphic detail will be included, only dancing) you will then be able to choose mutations to try and evolve. Again, dice will be rolled to see how successful these attempts are. However, at the same time other players and species will be evolving and interacting around you, shaping the very world in which you play. And what’s more is that each round, there will be a chance of a devastating event hitting the world and shaking up the game. The smallest most insignificant creature could easily then become the most successful. In this world, nothing is safe.
Actions
For much of the game, you will be playing as an individual of your species. Each round, you will be able to vote for one action to make. This action is anything that can be reasonably expected of your species. For example, you could vote to move closer to a light spot. Reproduction is a special action that is detailed below. Dice will be rolled to determine the success of your action:
1. Unsuccessful
2. Minimal Change
3. Minimal Change
4. Quite Successful
5. Quite Successful
6. Very Successful
(Note: In any dice rolls, there will be some instances where common sense will prevail over it; in these cases I will use my best judgement.)
You will ultimately want to use your actions to find food/compounds and survive. You may also be required to find water. If you die, you will normally be reborn as a younger or weaker individual of your species. However, if your species is at risk of extinction, then your death could mean the end of your species; in this case you will get to choose from a relatively successful species and branch off of them.
Reproduction
Reproduction is, perhaps, the core of this game. When you choose to reproduce, which will be done as an action, you must also submit what feature/s you wish to evolve. If it is impossible, I will not incorporate it. In the earlier stages of the game, you will only be able to reproduce when you have enough compounds, later on it will be a matter of growing to an adult stage and finding a mate. These levels will be given to you as a percentage. At 90%, you will be allowed to reproduce provided the conditions are right. At first, you will only have one vote, but you will get another one when you develop sexual reproduction, and yet another one when you develop a working nervous system. A dice will then be rolled to see if your mutations went as planned:
1 - Deleterious Effect
2 - No Effect
3 - Normal Effect
4 - Normal Effect
5 - Normal Effect
6 - Bonus Effect
Where possible, once you evolve, you will begin your creature’s lifetime as a young version, or a version lacking in compounds.
Species
Of course, even though you will play as an individual, you will still have to think about your overall species. Based on the mutations you choose and their success in the current environment, your species will be given a Thriving Status that indicates how well they are doing:
Extinct (EX) - Whoops! This species has bitten the dust.
Critically Endangered (CR) - This species is on the edge of extinction. If nothing changes they will very soon be gone forever.
Endangered (EN) - This species is steadily declining. If nothing changes, they could be heading for extinction.
Vulnerable (VU) - This species is doing okay but aren’t the most secure. A disruption in the environment could soon change that.
Near Threatened (NT) - This species is doing pretty good, except for a few niggling problems.
Least Concern (LC) - You’re fine, you’re fine! Unless you get hit by that meteor. Seriously, this species has very few concerns.
Events
Furthermore, don’t forget that each round there is a possibility of an event being triggered. I will roll a dice to see if there will be an event and how intense it is. If there is an event, I will roll dice again and the number will coincide with an event in a list. By events, I am referring to natural disasters such as earthquakes and forest fires. These dice rolls could also trigger long-term events like global warming that will change the face of the planet. Always be prepared for immediate death.
Join Up
There will be seven places open and it’s first come, first serve. Atrox has one place for helping out with this, which means there are only six left. Please give the name of your next species and choose a mutation to evolve from the base microbe below. Also, I will be playing because I am running this game and it is my right. However, most stuff is randomised so I won’t know any more than you will.
I was recently inspired to make this game from rewatching a childhood favourite; Walking With Dinosaurs. I hope this get’s you in the mood:
Round 0
(Borrowed from TheCreator with permission.) After millions of years, the planet has finally reached a state of equilibrium. The climate changes have become less severe, and although it still goes well below zero in the winter and far above 50 degrees Celsius in the summer, life is slowly but surely taking a grasp. Eruptions and earthquakes are still fairly common and cause death to thousands of species every few months. However, this has only increased the pace of evolution, as organisms less fit to survive are completely wiped from the face of the planet.
Euthrivum primus
Environment: See Above
Appearance: The first eukaryotic cell; it has only a nucleus, within cytoplasm, contained within a membrane. This means to get energy it metabolizes glucose in its cytoplasm, a not wholly efficient process. It inhabits the very bottom of the sea, feeding of the many compounds released into the sea when the planet was formed. It cannot move and so must depend upon compounds coming to it. This combined with lack of efficiency means this species is vulnerable. However, whilst the compounds last, they can survive.
Individual Status: Healthy
Species Status: VU
