I think it might look cool, but wouldn't in be really distracting? Wouldn't just the starting biome be a better thing, it might be easier to be able to pick camouflage colours or something.

That's a fair idea, but ideally there should also be a mode similar to Spore's Test Drive that should allow the player to choose adequate camouflage due to being able to choose terrains for it. At least, that was part of the last discussion on it that I saw on the old forum.

I personally think it looks a bit obnoxious, but I think it'd be alright if it was an option.

I really like it tbh. Selecting test drive mode would let you choose the environment you wish to play in, but a DNA strand background serves as a nice neutral space to work in imo.
If the background were a bit more faded it'd be better so the creature doesn't like blend into the back there
Edit: Bonus points if the DNA strands rotate slowly while moving up and down the screen
