As of this edit, this is the most recent mockup.
Hi! I figured it wouldn't hurt to throw together some concept art and mockups of possible layouts for the Organism Editor, so I did. I'm aiming for a basic design idea that can be altered to fit all planned editors, similar to how Spore's editors all share basic unifying design concepts. Most of the buttons and tabs in these are described in the Organism Editor page of the Thrive wiki. I'm using Paint.NET and a low resolution, primarily to make alignment of various components easier. Below are the old concept interations, from oldest to newer.

That's pretty close to the shard-style concept (which, of course, is fortunate, since the shard style's been ditched): Everything aligns real well on your version, too (like both in-progress Microbe Stage GUIs), which is great.

I'm a wee bit confused; how is it fortunate that it's close to a ditched style?

I don't really see much similarity to the old shard design, it looks more like Oliver's.

I'm a wee bit confused; how is it fortunate that it's close to a ditched style? Well, when you can one style to go with another (in this case, shards for minimalism), it sounds good to have the latter's counterpart to whatever's been made from the former. In this case, your idea has pretty much the same content as the shard-style one (tabs for structure, etc.), but has the same minimalism (and other aspects) as what we have in progress for the Microbe Stage. I don't really see much similarity to the old shard design, it looks more like Oliver's. That's the point.

I don't really see much similarity to the old shard design, it looks more like Oliver's. I actually intentionally styled it off of Oliver's GUI art. The colors are sampled straight from it, and it's why there are 45° angles in it at all Well, when you can one style to go with another (in this case, shards for minimalism), it sounds good to have the latter's counterpart to whatever's been made from the former. Ah, that makes sense. The minimalism and similarity to the current work-in-progress is of course intentional too -- what good would it be if it varied wildly from what the team was already making?

Looks cool, but I do see some problems: - It's basically the Spore's editor
- Aren't we planning on having the player make it's own organs (or at least be able to make it's own organs)? Because there isn't a "make organ" section
- Shouldn't it look a lot like the microbe GUI, as to not force the player to relearn the whole thing?

1) If you mean in terms of the tab structure, I guess, but Spore only has one tab level instead of three. The species name and tag list could certainly be moved around. 2) I only became aware of that feature after having made all of the concepts, and the only displayed tab in the concept images are the structure tabs anyways. Organs would be the heart icon next to the skeleton. Considering the positive reception of these, I might have to make a tab for that too, but I would need to get a decent understanding of what's planned for organs and muscle/skin editing first. 3) Only got a decent look at the current microbe layout after finishing. I'm currently working on adjusting it to more closely resemble it.

Next iteration is done. It's much closer to the current microbe editor GUI now.

I quite like it. But maybe put the measures in metric system?
