Meta is basically when something references itself. So the forum's meta is discussing the forum itself.

In video games, 'Meta' is typically used to refer to the strongest strategies/loadouts etc. However, in the context of the forum, Meta means talking about the forum itself, as Atrox said.

Well pokemon's metagame refers to it's competitive online gameplay rather than the main story

and if you talk about the "meta-level" of a conversation you mean bodylanguage, voice modulation etc. Anything giving you information about the speaker wich is not his spoken word

And for stuff like Meta Ridley it means metallic.

I thought meta-ridley was because of Narotiza's "meta = strong"
edit: in comics a meta gene is referred to as the "superpower" gene

No, I used to have a Metroid game on my DS years ago. The only reason I know of Meta Ridley is through Super Smash Bros Brawl, although I do know it comes from Metroid.

Meta is a prefix that means "about itself", or "a layer of abstraction above". For example, metadata is a type of data that describes data -- certain features of a set of data (for example, trends) are abstracted out, and studied in their own right as data.
A metagame is a game abstracted out from a game -- for example, competitive pokemon or League of Legends have metagames, which are 'games' set within certain rules abstracted out from the base game (for example, in pokemon metagames people usually abstract away the work that goes into breeding and training a good pokemon, and instead assume you can get a perfectly bred pokemon for free; and also add other rules to make the game more fun/fair/etc). Confusingly the word metagame usually refers to the current characteristics of the game in competitive play -- ie, the metadata about the game as played competitively; stuff like which strategies are currently dominant, etc.
So the meta forum is a forum where we discuss the forum itself; so it's a metaforum.

StealthStyleL, the wiki says Meta-Ridley is a reborn, enhanced Ridley. So Narotiza's "meta = strongest" would apply here no?
