Let's take an example: Someone adds a certain object to the game, which another corporation might have copyright on (just an example). The big bad corporation tries to sue Revolution Games. What happens? Revolution Games isn't a "company", with lawyers and the like. It also doesn't have a spokesperson... What are you guys planning on doing (or do you guys even have a plan?) when legal problems arise (because let's face it, this will probably happen once)

As far as my limited knowledge of Copyright goes, Thrive is a non-profit game. Thusly it's free to do whatever it wants, really. I might (and probably am) wrong on that though.

I think since revolutionary games is not a real company / firm you cannot really sue them . If I am wrong then rev . Games would still have to authorize and release that version of thrive . If someone made a Sims mod that adds apple products for example then I couldn't sue maxis / ea could I ?

After doing some brief research, I do see the point you're making even though I was originally skeptical. There are hundreds of games which allow player-created content, and some have indeed had issues with copyright infringement. EA decided to adopt a YouTube-style policy with Spore, where on a corporation's request a creation would be taken down from the servers. But it's not clear whether you mean that kind of content. Any content which a player distributes may be subject to copyright law, but it would astound me if there are laws against simply creating something related to a trademark in-game. You can make X-wings in KSP and no one will stop you, you can make a Superman costume in LittleBigPlanet and no one will stop you (unless you distribute it, which is where it gets tricky to know what would happen), you can make and share videos of the creation process of hundreds of copyrighted items in Spore and no one will stop you. And about Revolutionary Games being non-profit, that won't affect it at all. It may do in some legal cases, but not here.

I'm not talking about that part... I'm talking about, for example, someone using a sprite from another game, or putting royalty music in there somewhere (just examples)

If it is an official dev that can authorize the version that could be a problem . But to give a definite answer we have to know what rev games actually is ; which form of cooperation ,in which state is it registered etc .

Well yeah, that would definitely be copyright infringement, but that would require a modification to the game itself (either via a mod or as part of development). If you mean a developer coming along and doing that with the game we release, there's no way we'd allow that. Contributions to the code and assets are regulated by the senior devs - every addition goes through review, so something like that would not be tolerated.

It's just an example remember that word. I'm not saying "what would happen if that specific thing happened..." I'm saying "what if legal problems arise". Stop talking about that specific thing... But for real, what would happen if Revolution Games get's sued or something?

That sounds kind of rude. Olliver was answering your question, show some appreciation.

My guess is that if some manner of legal action were enacted against Revolutionary Games, the initial cease and desist order would be delivered to whoever owns the domain name for the main website, following which the devs would have a discussion about mounting a defense, and if there's a reasonable avenue for raising the necessary funds. That might be the only situation where I'd support a donation campaign. Probably we'd appoint a developer who lives in the country of origin for the dispute to represent the "company" in court.
But this is all speculation.
