After being gone for a long long time I've decided to return with an idea. Recently I've been taking drafting class and I heard about an engineering software known as CAD. Unfortunately I don't really know how it works since it isn't used until 2nd year drafting, but it seems promising enough to base the tech editor off of. The idea would be a slightly simplified version with an improved ui.

The only CAD software I've used is Solidworks. It's pretty neat but projects can take several hours and if they're sufficiently complex they can take several sessions.
I really like the freedom it would offer though if the simplified UI you posit could make common features faster to make (ie ready made limb arrangements etc.). Additionally CAD features could make it easier to control organism scaling and allow for modular creature design.
And the time factors may just be endemic to solidworks, perhaps someone who uses Autodesk or some such has had better experiences.
