Looking at the end game and thinking a bit We have to realize the impact and purpose of Ascending, while it is the final stage and for some people that's it, we need to think about the implications of Ascension and the affects of it in the "real" game world. One thing to note is that we (presumably) don't have a solid idea of what ascension powers there will be, aside from the obvious sort of Gaia terraforming and other godlike ideas. My thoughts were that some godlike abilities should be unlocked overtime with others being unlocked from the start, maybe some things simple as planet editing and destruction, after all it wouldent make sense for there to be a cosmically galaxy maker from the start. I think that if this was implemented then it would mean less people would get bored from it, and, maybe as an added bonus, depending on how your species was during its evolution/progress, you could be a kind, evil, or neutral god (as an example) and start off with different powers. Of course this is all mear speculation as the idea of Ascension is VERY far away, but it's something to think of.

Morality is kind of arbitrary, but unlocking more powerfull abilities as you progress seems like a great idea to me.

It's amazing how the forum change created a sort of generation gap. We came up with a rather detailed list, back in the day.
Personally, I'd like to see rather general, flexible, tools, with various parameters. Creation tool - select object type, size, velocity Destruction tool - select radius Edit tool (brings up a tweak panel for objects you click) - edits simple stats, such as size, rotation, health, and offers option to open game editor for cells, organisms, tech Effect tool - performs one of a number physical effects, depending on what game-physics allows (gravity, (electro)magnetic, light-emitter, sound-emitter) Effects which get too many options could then be branched into their own tools. Generalising like this should be easier for the player than switching between many discreet tools, with the right controls.

Unlocking god abilities doesn't make sense to me . What's the point of becoming a god if you're not almighty ?

Unlocking god abilities doesn't make sense to me . What's the point of becoming a god if you're not almighty ? The idea of unlocking god tools is that technological singularities in various areas give a civilization near limitless power in that field. So for a time you could be god-like in your ability to genetically engineer organisms (your smartphone can just print a fertilized egg, who wouldn't want that), but still limited in your ability to make planets. Or you can vaporise a planet, but not trivially generate the exact materials needed to recreate it. Or something. EDIT: Unlocking individual powers, in my mind, would be prior to ascension. By ascension, I agree that all these powers should be made available, with the expectation that the player has already gained most of them through technological means.

We should have something like a shrub gun that lets you place shurbs and ferns on a planet! ;P

In my eyes, Ascension is like a reward for surviving through the hours of gameplay it will most likely take to get there. I even see it as almost post-game; going through the Ascension Gate is sort of the last achievement, and I think we even see the credits at this point (I can't remember if I saw this written some place or if I made it up.) By doing this you open up a new mode, Sandbox Mode, in the galaxy you played through. The idea of Sandbox Mode is that you can create anything, do anything, so I don't think that abilities should be unlockable but be available right at the start. Also, by this point, you are practically just energy, so you can't do research like a civ would.

My original idea for sandbox mode was that it was separate from the main galaxy, so anything you do isn't going to have consequences on your main saves, and random events don't occur. Good for making videos, or making scenarios (like Galactic Adventures), or just messing around. It later got its own forum section, back on the old forum.

I think there is a difference because Sandbox Mode is a separate option from the main menu which could, like The Uteen said, be away from your galaxy. However, Ascension is unlocking Sandbox Mode within the galaxy that you played through. Or maybe it's just me.
