All I'm reading about is how much airtime Thrive is going to get on Youtube. I'm sure that will bring us all the old disgruntled Spore nerds we could want, but are we not also targeting websites that coders or artists might frequent? We as devs will be, but with all due respect we'd prefer to represent ourselves in those places rather than have fans do it for us and risk misrepresenting the project. That is good to know.

If you trade with someone, you're going to have to come to some understanding of value. Thrive isn't an economy sim. A single abstract currency works as a mental placeholder for this understanding.

Well, there are many many systems, and those that have never been observed by a sapient species would certainly have no names. I've never found that particularly immersion breaking. Just say that there's a consensus on what to call it that isn't necessarily represented by a game mechanic. What do you mean by the ones worth remembering? In Spore I had to colonize hundreds of stars (and I don't imagine Thrive will be smaller scale) but everything worked just fine. Having assigned names allows information about any object to be communicated easily. Aside from wormholes, Spore managed information overload as well as any game could have. Let's recall what is said about things that ain't broke.

www.spore.com/comm/prototypesI don't think the devs know about these yet. There could definitely be something useful there for someone working on a Spore-esque game.

Spore's creative freedom is the only thing that gets people through the actual gameplay. Unless it's something really novel (playing everything as a tiny maggot!) a challenge that takes away that freedom isn't going to be very fun.

Inspired by a conversation in the Skype Group, I decided to record myself playing Spore as a featureless maggot with only a single filter mouth. I suppose I might record the other stages later. (this is alright to put in here, right?) Sorry bro, it doesn't count unless it's on hard.

Why would there be an unnamed system? I'm arguing that systems should have names independent of any empires.

Randomized names did just fine for Spore. Of course you should be able to name your homeworld, but too much customization is distracting. There is a such thing as too much freedom in a game. Maybe that's just my distaste for anything No Man's Sky. EDIT: moopli, Kraken, that is a terrible idea. Having names made the systems landmarks, and this builds up a mental geography over time. They definitely shouldn't be renamed at the whim of the AI.

You aren't. In Soviet Russia, Google uses YOU.
(I deserve to be shot for that. Yes.)

There's a cheat function?!!? Anyway, this is something you're going to have to fix eventually, when the game becomes something more like, well, a game.

Wait a minute, did that 'Baltic Development Forum' website just overtake it? I swear just a few minutes ago it was on top... I've no idea how Google calculates this, sorry.

That's Russian Google and the results are in Russian. Since Google is different across domains I can understand not getting the same result in another country, but I can't understand why you have it set to Russian? EDIT: Oh, I get it. It doesn't send me to your results, it does a whole new search with the default language being Russian. American Google shows it as first.

Well, there is that one pink guy with five flagella... Didn't notice that. It turns out that the problem actually is that all the cells seem to be stuck at one speed regardless of how many flagella they have. I outpace my own offspring easily.

Wait, not "thrive game development forums", not even "thrive development forums", just "development forums"? I don't understand how you think that's a bad thing, to me that seems pretty impressive for a relatively small project. I don't think it's a bad thing. Just something I wanted to mention. Also, I was mistaken- it's first. ("Development forum" won't work; you must use the word "forums" in the plural.) Wow, really? I assume most of them aren't overly active... a quick glance at the last post of each forum shows half of them more than a day old, and the rest usually between two and twenty hours. I would say this is a reasonable size if an average thread gets new posts within minutes. Otherwise it's just information overload.

Is this by any chance inspired by the popular civilization RP back on the Sporum? Because I made the original. It'd be awesome to know that my twelve-year old self is still influencing the community after all these years.

Well, after using vBulletin everything looks bad... but there are too many separate boards, which is a huge no-no for small forums trying to build a community, the art doesn't do anything to draw the eye, it's hard to find certain functions and things seem too large in general. Still, it's not so bad as your development forums. Where would I go to post a video of me playing Thrive, btw? Do you have suggestions for what boards to cut/merge? Make the 'forum groups' (General, Thrive, Not Thrive, and Creativity Corner) into individual forums. Make the current forums into subforums (some not even that). Remove all subforums. Seriously, how can you guys operate like this? If there were twenty people a day on here it would still be too large. I can't think of a better way for driving away casual followers. Weeeellllllll... this is my subjective opinion and all... but a dirty shiv would be less of an insult to the eye. EDIT: Fun fact: yours is third on the list if you Google "development forums." Guess not too many people use them.

I'm disappointed that there isn't any 'fast' cell in the game. Slap on another pair of flagella and you leave everyone else in the dust.
Are different means of propulsion planned? One of the things I liked about Spore's cell stage was that you had three options with genuinely unique strengths and weaknesses.

Or you can just go into the editor directly from the main menu.
I don't imagine preventing exploits are a priority at this stage, anyway.
EDIT: Ah, yes, you can instantly reproduce by pressing P.
