(Not really a discussion about a game but I had no idea where else to put this so...)
Back then I used to be a major Sonic fan, I played nearly all of the games (except Sonic 06 thankfully), read the comics, I even had a fan character (RIP Scorch the Dragon)! But over time as I became a teen I started getting into more RPG and Action games (Dark Souls, Dragon's Dogma, Elder Scrolls, etc.) and now that I look back on it, SEGA is really kinda screwed.
I say this for two reasons. One, SEGA only has one franchise worth noting, Sonic. Now while alot of Sonic games are good, Nintendo (yes I`m using them as an example) has Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Kirby and a lot of other franchises that produce great games (Mario and Luigi: Dream Team being a favorite of mine). SEGA has basically been making Sonic games for the last 20 years and it seems to be the only things keeping them relevant, and even then the Sonic franchise seems to be caught in this limbo where they release one good game, then a bad one, then a good one, so on and so forth (since the Sonic fanbase is almost impossible to please).
Two, alot of people bring up that Sonic games are just as easy to make as Mario games. This is untrue due to Mario and Sonic's core principals. Mario's core principals is that he can run, jump and (most of the time) get powerups. Sonic's core principal is that he can run fast and therefore, have fast-paced platforming. In comparison, Mario's principals make it far easier to place him in several different genres while still having the whole game feel "Mario-like" (The Mario and Luigi series, Mario Kart, even the sports games still have that distinct Mario feel). With Sonic, if you take away his speed, you take away what drew people to him in the first place (hence why Sonic Boom, Sonic Shuffle and Sonic Labyrinth are said to suck by Sonic fans).
If for whatever reason, SEGA stopped making Sonic games, they would take away their source of income and probably fade away.
(Lemme know about your opinion/saltiness about why I`m wrong)
