So how exactly is colonizing planets going to work? In Spore (yes I`m making that comparison) you unrealistically shot a little shiny orb down and it spontaneously created a colony which made no sense. I imagine it would work more like you would have to make sure the planet is habitable, then you would need to shuttle down members of your species to begin setting up settlements which means you would also have to shuttle down enough resources so they could establish a foothold on the planet. Then as time passes and the planet's resources are discovered and utilized, the settlement could eventually grow into a modern/futuristic city.
If anyone else has a better idea let me know.

I'd think that the player would be an explorer, going to uncharted planets and sending out a probe which would send data to the closest planet that you've already colonized. the data would determine if the planet's habitable, and if so, would give you instructions to prepare for colonization: a CO2 machine(a thing I thought of to give a planet atmosphere), a colony of macro organisms: mosses, lichens, bacterias, algaes, nitrifying bacterias, and protist. And then you'd leave it to the AI to do the rest. And you could slowly watch your species terraform the planet to be just like their's.

Maybe it also includes things like prefab shealters, an initial number of colonists, and supplies.
But that's if you have it set to you only comanding a star ship like in that game.
If you are comanding an entire empire then it would probably be different, not at first but as time went on. Maybe at first you get a notification like "suitable planet found" and you look at it and it tells you what it needs and how far and you have to build it and recruit a segment of your population and then send them off and semi manage the colony while managing the homeland too. But as the empire expands and you colonize more eventually you unlock a tech that allows the foundation of a Central Colonization Authority which handles the micro for you and you just have to make which colonies you want and how much resources you allocate to the Authority. At least that's my idea

I think there should be lots of available paths to a self-sustaining colony.
If you're an advanced nation that's been colonizing for millennia, then sure, you've probably developed self-contained colony ships that have all the things needed to get a colony going, and can just be set off with the push of a button.
Or maybe you have a well-developed system of drones that can prepare the ground for you (whether it be terraforming work or just mining and refining some materials and building some shelters).
Or maybe you'll send a few probes and human exploratory teams, do experiments to develop ISRU (In-Situ Resource Utilization) technology, and eventually a temporary scientific base would graduate into a sporadically=inhabited scientific base, then into a permanent scientific base with heavy resupply needs, and as research projects develop the ability to manufacture more on-site, the resupply needs would go down. It would probably not be worthwhile to make that kind of base self-sufficient, but the tech could be used on a farther base that might eventually become self-sufficient. (eg, a moon base developing tech that will be adapted for a more-independent mars base)

You should also be able to send drones to look what resaources are avaible on the planet. Since i can imigane a begining space-stage civilliasation, wich probably has problems with over-population and such, just take every habatible planet they find, and (if they have the capablities to do so) terraform semi)habetible planets. A giant space empire however, would probably only set up permanent settlements (excluding miletary and scientific bases and such) on planets with either a strategicly important location (e.g trade route) or planets with enough minerals and such.
