www.gamedev.net/topic/528469-evolutions-a-3d-game-project-of-evolving-a-unique-creature-updated-23-mar-09/Hey, when I saw the information about this game called "Thrive", it reminded me so much for the game I once worked on. That game was called "Evolutions!", and based on the ideas of "Hirnsausen", that guy who created a thread inside the Spore forum in a way that it looked for Maxis like a new, serious competition to the boring Spore was arising! I remember, the effect we all hoped for, did not occur. No better version of Spore. But the idea for the open-source game "Evolutions!" was born. I still remember the names of "Hirnsausen" and "ParadoxJuice", two of the main figures of that game. Interestingly, here in Thrive everything has exactly the same structure, even the same names, as our game had. Even some of the artwork is copied from "Evolutions!". How comes? Did there someone just copy our ideas and removed the names of the original developers? How else to explain all these exact similarities? Even the stages have exactly the same names. Strange. I remember, we were at one point of time quite some big group. We had our own game development forum and got many ideas together. But at one point of time, some people decided to split away and just a few days after, our own game forum got hacked and all contents kinda deleted. Since that time the development halted, but all our ideas and are still there, inside the databases, with their original time stamp (time and date). How comes we don't read here anything about those people who had all these initial ideas?

Evolutions! was certainly the origin of Thrive, and we still credit them whenever the project's history is discussed: revolutionarygamesstudio.com/faq/where-did-this-project-begin-and-how-has-it-evolved/Basically a group of developers split off from the Evolutions! team because they didn't like Hirnausen's way of running things, forming Thrive. A lot of the ideas were inherited, as at first the two concepts were pretty much identical, only a project logistics divide between the two. When the Evolutions! forum was overrun by spam bots, Hirnausen (or Sven as he's also known) was forced to abandon the project, leaving Thrive as the only place where the ideas still lived. We've even seen the old glimpse of Sven since then: davoonline.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=4544#p16313After a bit of digging I even found ParadoxJuice on our own forums, and he didn't seem to have a problem with the project using many of his old ideas: thrivegame.canadaboard.net/t322-i-m-simultaneously-the-newest-and-oldest-member-hereUnfortunately we don't know the names of anyone specific from the old days, beyond people like ~sciocont or The Uteen who joined Thrive. It may be that there aren't many left who we don't know anyway, as I remember quite a few introductions on the forums from people who had been working on Evolutions! and joined Thrive at a later date, so they're already credited for much of our work anyway. One member who you might remember is Inca, who gave his own account of the events in the Evolutions!-Thrive transition: thrivegame.canadaboard.net/t1216-its-been-a-few-years-but-i-m-back-with-forum-suggestions

Thrive was born of an attempt to backup the work done on Evolutions!, since the Evolutions! forum had a history of technical problems, and hirnsausen was often not available when he was needed. You can see here: evobackup.forumotion.net/ the work done to first backup the work worth backing up, and then the attempts to kickstart work on Evolutions! again. You can also see where the name Thrive came from -- it seems that many people thought "Evolutions!" was a poor name, and "Thrive" was the most popular alternative, so when the group of people managing the backup decided they needed a new forum, they took the chance to rename the project from Evolutions! to Thrive, per popular demand. They were also doing their best to contact the important members of the team, so they could continue work on Evolutions! under the new name Thrive. However, Thrive very quickly changed direction from the plans which had been originally set out for Evolutions!, so it would not have done the original project justice if the Thrive team claimed to be the legitimate successor to Evolutions!. It seems like Sven decided he did not want to be part of Thrive, as, from the signs we can see of him, he's continued to harbor ambitions of reviving Evolutions! as a project under his executive control instead of the decentralized model Thrive has always followed. In fact, he just did so: forum.spore.com/jforum/posts/list/83323.page and I personally hope he succeeds. We're planning on contacting ~sciocont to get a more full explanation of what happened, because remember: none of us on the team were part of the original team from Evolutions!. If my inferences and discoveries above are correct, then we can make some sort of statement, if you like, explaining, for everybody to see, the debt we owe to Evolutions!.

In fact, he just did so: forum.spore.com/jforum/posts/list/83323.page and I personally hope he succeeds. Actually, I looked at his posts, and he seems to claim that the founders of Thrive stole his concept and claims that Thrive will fail, he probably damaged our reputation by doing so. It doesn't affect my opinion on both games, since I want both of you to succeed in developing both games, but a lack of cooperation would result in the doom of both Thrive and Evolutions!. It wouldn't be the right choice in my opinion, since it seems selfish and egotistical. If Sven ever gets the Evolutions! forums back up I might speak to him about it and say how much Thrive has changed a lot. Although I don't believe he's gonna try to sabotage Thrive especially since it has "thrived" so much, it seems likely based on his attitude. EDIT: I found out that you took care of it for me, thanks

hellrockI wouldn't say either would be doomed from lack of cooperation. Thrive's team looks reasonably self-sufficient, and a potential Evolutions! team could start from scratch just fine. It's just that neither could gain anything from Sven's unreasonable slander (with his thread on the Sporum derailing into the Sporumers turning around and utterly pwning him). No one owes anyone anything.
