How will multicellular stage end? will a large cell count decide if a player advances, or will it depend on some sort of simple intellegence?

While for the player the transition will be smooth and unnoticeable, in terms of development, the stage will end when the organism has reached a certain threshold of intelligence.

No love for hiveminds? What if intelligence is linked to growth, or only present in adults / a single caste of the species? A tree, a Smilodon, and a Neanderthal walk into a bar. Each order some "Organism Mode" draught.
The three are stunned when the bartender provides each three mugs of differing beverages. The tree is the first to speak. "Uhh, barkeep, what's the deal?"
The bespectacled bartender rubs the back of his head. "Well, you're not Aware or Awakening like these two, so I gave you a pint of Multicellular instead."
The Smilodon is still confounded. "Well, what's the difference between me and him, then?" He gestures towards the Neanderthal.
"Your actions don't lead you to Society like his do, so you're Aware, but not Awakening."
The Neanderthal still isn't too sure what's going on here. "Well, can't you just make one drink called 'Organism Stage?' I'm fine with a mug of 'Sapience Stage' even if I'm just leading up to the better parts of it."
The bartender is noticeably uncomfortable. "We can't just change things like that. There's folks barely out of the Microbe Stage that are Multicellular but aren't technically in Organism Mode like you are, and making one general Microscopic Stage drink is too broad."
The short-tempered Smilodon loses his patience. "There's barely any visible difference in playing as us. Are you blind?!"
The bartender shakes his head. "No, I have transitions."
