I found this game called SpaceEngine, where it simulates almost the entire galaxy, with places where we have no idea what is there yet procedurally generated. It's a free download and can be used simply to mess around in, or used for photography. While it is closed source, it is planned to be released as a game engine when it is closer to completion. Might be something fun to poke at.

This has been suggested before, including here: thrivegame.canadaboard.net/t1183-space-engineThe consensus is that it would be nice to use Space Engine, but the restrictions it places on software which uses it make it unlikely to happen.

Yeah, I kind of figured. I was mostly putting it here for people who hadn't heard of it to take a look, and maybe have as a kind of inspiration in the future.
