This applies really to any stage, however I think it would be most notable in Aware stage.
If the player's species is stays for quite a while in there current stage and decides not to pass to the next(at least for the time being), would other species surpass them? Assuming that they would opens up a whole new window of opportunities. Domestication? Wars between species?
I think this is very intriguing and would love to have further conversation on this topic.

This has been discussed in the past and I'm pretty sure the general census was for there to be a setting for whether or not you wanted other organisms to surpass your stage. It would be your choice.
And if you allowed this, domestication of your species was considered but it was less concrete.

I don't know how it could be implemented as in each stage time would pass at different rates (You are in aware, some creature reach sapience and are learning how to make tools, you enter the editor to make a few evolutionary changes, and when you exit the editor 5 million years has passed and the sapient creatures have reach space stage and blow up all the planets in the system to make a dyson sphere).

I don't see how it's a problem; it just means no other species can go onto a stage above you.
