Round 22
A new age dawns in the south as for the first time in history, a plethora of civilizations have arisen and come into mutual contact to rival the advancement and dominance of the north. The diplomacy that follows between the Ekalans, the Navaprans, the Khorati, and the Ushnuks will define the fate of the region for centuries to come.

Road network (5)
Improved ships (5)
Armed colonization of the north (4)
The uprising of the warrior caste was met with consideration by the National Assembly. After a brief period of discussion, it was decided the demands would be granted, and the warriors, surprised at the ease of their success, emigrated from the cities with their families in troves to settle down on these new tracts of property. Many of these settlers have actually expanded outwards from the conquered lands and started setting up new settlements in previously unowned land, enlarging the borders of the republic. They have not faced too much resistance from any tribes in the area. Although this has resolved the issue of their unrest, the emigration of the former warrior caste has drained much of the former military talent of the Republic from being able to serve in the army.
After many years of labour, an extensive road network of has been built between the major cities of the Republic. Of the cities connected are the rapidly growing settlement of Devaila in the east, the emerging city Morista in the north, and the capital Aliaca in the east. Roads have increased the rates of travel, communication, and trade, greatly benefiting the growth, prosperity, and administration of the empire.
The growing cities of the Republic have led in a shift in the labour force from mostly farmers and foragers to more specialists and artisans and craftsmen in the urban centers. Shipbuilding has become an especially popular profession, and the art and technique of designing ships has vastly improved in the past few generations. Beyond simple canoes and rowboats, one can also find oared vessels, large fishing ships, and bulky trade barges. This has led to a boon in fishing, in the naval presence of the army, and in trade, communication, and travel. Although the road network has been significant, the improvements in shipbuilding have made naval trade and transport the lifeblood of the Republic, since it is geographically wrapped around the body of the Soloan Sea. Some traders, using these newly improved vessels, have been actually able to navigate upriver from the Soloan Sea to the Allumnos Sea. They have established contact with a long lost nemesis, the Navapran city-states, on the west coast of the sea, and a new power called the Ekalan Republic on the east coast of the sea.
Expeditions of colonists, scouts, and soldiers have ventured northwards to expand into and colonize new and unclaimed lands. This has been a success, with vast new swaths of land coming under Khorati control. Luckily, any tribes in the area knew of the fate that had befallen the Kasrans and Ushnuks before them and fled in the face of the Khorati soldiers. New villages and settlements have been set up, with fertile lands being cleared into fields for new farmers. However, the expeditions eventually came to a halt when they reached the borders of an old and familiar foe, the Navapran city-states. The Khorati have now come into contact with the Navaprans by land and sea, yet the Navaprans have yet to take any actions to show any peaceful or aggressive intentions towards the Khorati.

Road network (3)
The craftsmen and traders of the Sedreti towns have attempted to develop written scripts to record their transactions, yet every such attempt has come to no fruition.
A road network has been established between the cities, with most leading back to the capital of Sedret. Messenger posts have been established along the routes, to allow for faster communication between cities. However, funds and manpower were short over the course of the project, and the roads were made as just simple dirt roads, only dug along the main thoroughfares, and messenger posts were built few and far between. Nevertheless, these developments have greatly benefited the growing kingdom.
Meanwhile, messengers from the Khalah tribe have arrived requesting non-aggression and the commencement of trade relations between the two powers.
As a result of the proliferation of copper tools and weapons and the techniques of copperworking, the establishment of the monarchy, the growing population, the expansion of roads and communications, and the waning power of the Amouta and Bdabra tribes, the Sedret Kingdom has gained Medium Power status.

Countless emperors have come and gone, and absolute power has started to corrupt absolutely. The days of good emperors using their power to reform the empire for its betterment have passed, now supplanted by emperors who abuse their power to pursue their own hedonistic pleasures and exercise absolute power against their dissidents. The lower classes are upset; the slaves and second class citizens want citizenship and better living conditions. They still remember the diseases and famines that have recently plagued their forefathers. The middle class is upset at losing jobs to the slaves and second class citizens, and at increasingly densely packed cities. The upper class feels threatened by the emperor, as they have with many of the recent emperors, seeing them as petty power-mongers who will disrupt their personal and familial ambitions. Following the executions of the rebel leaders from the recent uprisings, many who were previously unhappy with the regime have now taken a hardline stance against the emperor.
Rivals are plotting in the dark. There have been a few assassination attempts against the emperor. Some have advised that the emperor and his family go into hiding until order can be restored. Others say he should relegate some of his authority to the governors, while others propose power being given to a body of nobles. Others simply want the throne for themselves, and the royal family just desperately wants to retain their control. The seeds have been planted for civil war.
After some negotiations, a royal marriage has been arranged between a princess of the Norican Empire and a prince of the Cassanite Kingdom. This has restored cordial relations between the two dynasties, and gifts have been given by both to the other. Nonetheless, it appears that the Cassanites have still kept their troops on the border, and in response the Norican governors on the eastern border have strengthened their garrisons as well.
Magistrates from the emperor travelled to the distant colonies to offer vassalization under imperial rule. Although the colonies treated the envoys well and sent gifts back for the emperor, they declined the offer, asserting their own independence but promising military alliance in the case that the empire ever comes under attack.
Recent attempts at improving ship designs amongst Norican craftsmen have failed to produce any noteworthy results.
Norican priests and missionaries were dispatched to treat with the Ectrean tribespeople to the west. Their missions were largely successful, with many prominent Norican Mythos communities being established amongst the tribes. Although it is only a dent in the vast population of the tribes at the time, these communities will continue to grow and convert over the years.
Engineers in the Norican cities had heard about mechanical devices in the old Crouton Empire that were used to bring down city walls and impale armoured men. Librarians have been able to retrieve a few manuscripts detailing these devices from the Library of Magnificence, and with the help of engineers have developed the first siege equipment in the Norican Empire. Although prototypes to replicate the ballista failed, the models of the catapult were a success, and select engineers with the knowledge of constructing these catapults have been placed in the armies to use their expertise in the field and teach the army engineers their knowledge. So far, the army has not yet had a chance to put their new siege weapons to use.

After centuries under construction, the Temple of Foudalaja was complete for only several years before construction began again to expand the complex to include a university. The process is currently underway, with much of the labour and funds of the republic dedicated towards it.
New reforms have come to the government. The council has convened and decided to establish an executive position of typically 1-3 men, elected by the council, to rule the republic. The council will act as their advisory body. The motion passed without too much dissent, and the first “Fajmuls” of the year were elected. Within the following months, there was a marked improvement in the pace of legislation and reform, with laws and issues no longer requiring the attention of the obstructively large council, but rather the few and guided hands of the Fajmuls.
However, the empire is still facing many administrative issues. Cities on the fringes of the realm have grown distant with poor transport and communications. There also appears to be plenty of corruption at the local levels of administration, and tax revenues have dropped considerably in recent years.
Envoys from the Fajmuls approached shipmakers in the cities of Nafjala to learn, reproduce, and improve upon their designs for ships. However, the shipmakers were extremely protective of their crafts, and refused all attempts. In some cases government officials were forcibly removed from the docks by local militias loyal to the shipmakers, who are a powerful faction in the coastal cities. The art of shipbuilding is a closely guarded secret for these Navapran families, and they do not wish to share it.
A road has been dug from Foudalaja to Aenerus. This has greatly increased trade and transport and communication between the two cities. Messenger posts have even been set up along the way to improve communication.
The militia of Foudalaja have been admitted into the educational programme of the university. Although the university itself is not yet complete, the tutors and instructors have made classes and have began private lessons available for the wealthy members of the militia. Over the years this has created an educated upper class of wealthy militia fighters, and an uneducated and poorer lower class of militia fighters. Militia duty has become integral to lifestyle in Foudalaja for the citizens, and education has become a form of stratification for those who serve in it.
Also, due to the arrival of traders and travellers in recent years, the Ekalans have come into contact with the Khorati Republic to the south.

EVENT: Soil Depletion
Crop Rotation (2)
Farming Tools (6)
With the crises of famine, drought, and soil depletion plaguing the kingdom, some resilient farmers have taken steps to feed the masses. Some communities of farmers have attempted to change the crops in their fields, following advice from farmers' tales and healers' premonitions that the same crop will poison the soil if planted there for too many seasons. However, the successes have been limited. For some farmers their fields have slowly started to regain their fertility, for others there has been no change. For many, they have still not been able to produce enough food to feed the demands.
Other farming communities have developed ploughs to till the soil, and what's more, modified forms of the plough that can be fitted with a harness to attach to beasts of burden. For the few farms that have adopted this, labour has skyrocketed with less cattle and oxen being able to fill the roles of jobs previously done by farmhands, increasing the productivity of these farms. However, the drawback is that many farms lie abandoned, impoverished, or undermanned, and are unable to reap the rewards of this new invention.
As a result, hunger and starvation are serious problems across the kingdom. Death tolls from famines are rising. The riots have ripped through settlements across the land and many cities have torn away in defiant secession from the king. The Immortals (the standing arm of the kingdom) have fallen to mutiny and rebellion. The government is unable to restore order or fight back against the insurrections. Some areas are in total anarchy or chaos. Banditry and raiding have become common and the roads have become dangerous for any traveller. The realm is crumbling, and unless drastic and miraculous action is taken, the Astaxi Kingdom is doomed.

Temple to Ascon (6)
Hatchets for combat (3)
Although the Ascari Empire has fallen many generations ago, their religion lives on in the Shaowayan Kingdom, where Ascon is the primary religion. Under recent orders of the former king, a new grand temple was constructed to be built in dedication to Ascon. Not only was the temple built in a remarkably quick timespan, but it's architect's designs have marvelled the city's dwellers and it has become an iconic monument of Meoron's skyline. It's construction is of fine stonework imported from the Ekalan Republic to the south, with beautiful surrounding gardens and pristine fountains. The temple has not only become a major travel destination for adherents of Ascon, but gradually a religious and administrative center of the Ascon followers as well. Meoron has become the new holy city of Ascon. Additionally, due to becoming a holy center for the Ascon religion, the Temple to Ascon has gained wonder status and grants an additional vote for the next round.
Metalworkers and weaponsmiths have developed new forms of shafted blades, based on designs used by woodcutters, to produce military axes and hatchets for use in battle. Although the designs are primitive and the quality of these weapons is not very great, they have been distributed amongst militia in many towns and cities for future use.
Though the past kings had made promises to conquer more land to the new landowning elite of the Shaowayan Kingdom, the years have passed and no armies have been raised. This has greatly upset the nobility, who were expecting new land to the east as their due. Some have raised local militias under their own banners for smaller scale campaigns into the east. Others have taken obstructionist stances to the king, refusing to pay taxes and blocking passage to travellers through their lands. And some of the most offended groups have been discovered to be plotting the overthrow of the current ruler.
Due to recent bountiful harvests and the advanced agricultural technology of the kingdom, the population has been continuously rising since the sharp decline at the fall of the Ascari Empire.

Domesticate wolves (3)
Scouts and gatherers have explored and experimented with the local fauna, to great success, and managed to cultivate and domesticate rice and beans. Small fields have sprung up in particularly fertile spaces in the region, but farming has remained limited due to the largely nomadic nature of the tribe.
Hunters and animal handlers have over the generations come in closer and closer contact with wolves, and finally the animal has been domesticated into a cousin species, dogs, as opposed to their wild counterpart. Dogs have been hugely effective in helping hunters catch their prey, as well as scouts exploring the environment and warriors defend against wild animals. These two developments have led to a great increase in the food available to the tribe.
Now that the tribe has been settled in the region for some time, hunters and gatherers have started venturing out further, and many have come back with reports about neighbours to the north and southwest. To the north lies a great realm with many permanent settlements, farms, roads, and infrastructure, who refer to themselves as the Ekalans. To the southwest scouts quickly returned with reports of encountering colonies and settlements of the Khorati, and any hostilities were avoided.

A holy shrine for a religion is automatically granted wonder status. A religion can only have one holy shrine.
Wonders of the World:
Thrall (Palace) – Kingdom of Acirema – Located in Pacam, Eos’ first city, this simple structure of wood, stone, and clay was the home of the king of Acirema, alongside his family and advisors. From here, the king ruled over his kingdom. It was destroyed by the Crouton army in the conquest and subsequent sack of Pacam.
Spear of Rannos – Norican Kingdom – Located in Noricara, the capital of the kingdom, this religious monument rises 20 feet high and is built of stone and capped with lead, representing the spear of a mythical religious figure of Norican Mythos named Rannos. It has become a site of worship and rituals by the Noricans.
Walls of Pacam – Crouton Empire – Located in Pacam, the new capital of the Crouton Empire, these large stone walls are the first permanent walls of any city, and although they took many generations to build, they now stand as an impressive feat of the might of the city, and a challenge to any who would dare attack it.
Library of Magnificence – Norican Kingdom – Description coming soon.
Walls of Noricara – Norican Empire – Description coming soon (I promise!).
Temple of Foushoo - Ekalan Cities - Located in Foudalaja, this large and elaborate temple is the holy site for the Foushooist religion. It took centuries to complete, before the mathematics was discovered to finally construct its pre-designed wide, flat roof.
Temple to Ascon - Shaowayan Kingdom - Located in Meoron, this beautifully constructed and lavish temple is the holy site and admnistrative center of the Ascon religion. It was built in a remarkably fast period of time.
Hall of Fame:
Any civilizations that reach Major Power status or greater before death will get a spot in the historical civ hall of fame. They will be added after their collapse.
