Would it be possible for creatures to be born with specific traits like being able to recognize the silhouette of a predator, and to actually learn stuff during their life?

The behavior editor (whatever form that may end up taking) should be able to handle something like predator avoidance. Since the discussion about senses still isn't concrete, how that would be handled is beyond my grasp. But that thing about the silhouette, do you mean like an incremental approach to behaviors? E.g. you must recognize a general shape, then a coloration, etc. because I like that idea.

It would still apply to other members of your species that aren't controlled by you, wouldn't it?

Interesting idea. It's also possible that, when you're playing, a predator you instinctually recognise could be lit up very bright, or have a big arrow above it's head (or something more in line with the UI). That would be a useful tool while playing.

That would be a useful tool while playing. I feel like this would work well with other senses like smell or hearing, but sight should be left up to the player.

Prehaps the sense of smell could be represented by a heat-signature sort of effect.

I imagine something like:

Back in the old forum I suggested scents could be represented by color coded scent trails.

I concur with Atrox on the scents, especially given that thermal sensation will likely be in the finished game as its own sense.
Edit: This is also swerving way off topic.

I guess that too would be pretty cool. Something like a wispy ghost trail from an organism is what I imagine.
