I noticed that some people are trying to figure out the 'Advanced Civilization Underwater' problem, so I thought I'd jump on the bandwagon.
So, I was thinking: what if we didn't need metalworking and such? Underwater, things like that don't need to matter if the species never hears about it.
I was thinking of maybe, somehow.... Rock or Coral cities.
Perhaps the creature uses some sort of naturally-occuring glue to hold the coral/rocks together, and made their homes out of it. Sure, they'd never have things like automobiles, planes, guns, ect., but that's just fine.
This would be good for a person who doesn't really wanna hit the Space stage, but rather wants to live it out in a city sort of way, with no further advancements and just having your people chill out, go to war,make allegiances and stuff like that - all underwater!
It might be hard to code, but I think it'd be pretty awesome to see brought to life. OvO

Welp, that topic didn't take long to come up... While we're obviously allowing unrestrained community discussion here as it doesn't detract from development, please bear in mind that few developers will want to take this topic very seriously, even if you think you've come up with a great solution. We're not trying to discourage anyone, just warning people that if they expect anything to filter through into the development side of things from here, it's incredibly unlikely. But hey, there's always the possibility of mods utilising your ideas or something similar. Anyway, I'd suggest people who want to post here read this thread first as it'll underline some of the ideas already discussed: thrivegame.canadaboard.net/t543-implementing-underwater-civilizationsEDIT: A side note on re-reading that thread: the harshness of its initial edited post and final few posts are indicators of just how resistant the devs will be to any suggestions.

I know they're taking it seriously, I never said they weren't. I guess I'm not cut out for talking about such serious topics, huh? Was it that obvious? ;v;

Also note that in the original thread, we've largely agreed that underwater cities/civs are possible, but that they will not advance beyond what is essentially the stone age. They cannot develop metalworking, advanced science, and will be unable to reach the space stage.
edit - to clarify this and the above. You don't need to convince us that underwater cities are possible, we agree, though we have yet to decide whether they will be included in the game (and probably won't decide until we start developing the civilisation stage). What the devs don't agree with is the possibility of metalworking or advanced civilisation, and while your free to try and prove that's possible, we've heard it so many times by now that you shouldn't expect any enthusiasm on our part.

The problem is, I never said anything about metalwork, I just said "who cares when you're underwater?" Plus I never saw where they said "yeah it's possible," all I saw was "is it possible?" so I thought I might help out. Guess it's already decided, though.
