I remember back in the days of the old forum, there were discussions about an option to censor/turn off violent and sexual content for players who might get disturbed by it; this is still a thing, right?

I haven't heard it discussed recently, but I presume so. Although, that's if programmers wanna put that stuff in anyway by the time we get there.
If they do, it will almost definitely have censorship options.

Trouble is, we want to make a system that provides the player/ai with a lot of freedom to create (within reasonable limits like "can this develop from an embryo following a particular kind of pattern" and "is it physically possible for this to exist"); and if so, then how the heck do we keep vaguely-phallic objects from arising naturally?
Though if you're asking about direct sexual behaviour, well, I guess we could make them dance and have hearts fly everywhere or something?
It would certainly absolve us from having to figure out how to animate their bodies when they mate, imean, the IK is hard enough to just make one organism move a body part somewhere, just think about how hard it would get when you have to coordinate two... Oy vey.

That system was pure belgium. I swear it was belgiuming terrible. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Just realised that this wasnt about that system.

This is one of the many many things where to give you a reasonable sounding answer I would first have to fabricate one. I'm usually game for that, but it's 2 AM local time, so... sorry Edit: aw k fine since I feel bad for giving a nonanswer here's a halfanswer: We have two choices: make our animation system able to animate inter-organism touch interactions (which is pretty dang hard), or completely avoid that problem by, i dunno, mushing their bodies into each other using the physics engine for some ragdoll fun, or making them do a spore dance, or making them shoot clouds of spores at each other, or something. Maybe mating kinematics isn't all that much harder than other finicky inverse kinematics problems, meaning it might be possible to generate some animations. But I wouldn't bet on that.

A tasteful fadeout to black screen, overlaid with a mating call?

I like your idea admiral, but really, I would like some good old fashioned ragdoll silliness like in Gmod. That will make the game>9000x better than what my original stance has been on how good this game will be.

There are two problems to address with censorship (specifically reproduction), player mating, and NPC mating. Player mating can be easily be covered with a simple fade in and out of black, but the player will also be roaming the environment and encountering NPC species that are mating, and in that case we'd probably put a placeholder animation unless we could come up with some nicer looking procedural animation for it.

Considering that, I realize that the fadeout then is probably not the best idea. No reason to code in two different mating situations. Before I offer any more helpful advice, quick question. Could it work like mating two parts in SolidWorks assembly? Just have the genital regions be attached and ragdolling the rest?

We're not coding in those two mating situations. They're going to be there as a result of the game's design. The fade to black works well as an easy solution to player mating. The issue is figuring out what to do when the player observes NPCs mating.

The issue is figuring out what to do when the player observes NPCs mating. So basically, creatures would be coded to do a normal biological mating position(doggy style) and the maneuvers would be determined by the structural design of the player's creation, so that the "doggy style" would be generated specifically for that creature?

Personally, I think "ragdoll mating" stuff would be too silly for Thrive, because I always pictured Thrive as being more serious than Spore. Now for NPC mating, i dunno, maybe blur it? :S

Gman ragdolling... I mean, come on! At least give us a way to cheat code it in, pretty pleaze?

What about non-censored versions? Censorship should be optional.

If you turn censorship on, it should blur it like in the Sims when they are having a shower.
