I've created a tik.io chat room for Thrive here: tlk.io/thrivegameUnfortunately for some reason it won't embed properly. Or more accurately, it will, but it then proceeds to make the entire site run massively slowly. As far as I can tell, you choose a nickname, and as long as you keep the same cache, it'll retain that nickname for you. Alternatively, you can log in with Twitter and have a permanent account. I propose we use the RG Twitter account as the admin, although I don't know who has access to it. Private messaging is possible, although I haven't tested it (because I'm the only one on it, duh). Since it won't embed, a nice alternative would be to have a link in the header to the chat page itself, possibly even invisible to members who aren't logged in. This would also reduce spam, though not prevent it entirely. I don't have admin permissions to create links in the header - I believe only Moopli does.

With 0.3.2 coming up (though not for a while yet) and more outreach following, it might be time to consider what improvements we need to make to our various websites to make them more appealing to newcomers. Even things as simple as game descriptions might need updating, in places like the subreddit sidebar and website home page. Think back to when you first found Thrive - what were your initial reactions to website appearances, and what could have been made clearer?

I think a good idea would be to add actual gameplay images to the slideshow you see on the front page of the website, as opposed to just having pure concept images. I think we've gotten to a point where Thrive screenshots look pretty decent.

My initial reactions… I thought the color scheme on the original Evolutions! site was pretty nice.

ok i fleshed out this online tidepool thing abit more
where this online tidepool is located
on the front page there will be a shortcut to this online tide pool
how will players upload there cells
they will upload it through the game
what will that actual tidepool look like
it would be a small petrie dish filled with players cells.
what can you do in the tidepool
on the left there would be a box that displays infomation.when a player clicks on something it shows its info eg this cell is extremely fast swimmer or this is a oxygen imiter below that box there would be options to place compound clouds in the dish.place bacteria and acourse make cells fight to the death on the right will be a arrow to display all the cells that people created.you can like them dislike them modifie them or drop them into the dish there would also be a option to download the cells into your game

A tidepool would be pretty cool, but that sounds a little too complicated, especially if the organisms are going to be uploaded from the game. Though perhaps a small preview of a premade microbial ecosystem and a bunch of labels describing the species and the flow of compounds or whatever. Maybe it could be a slideshow, with each slide showing a different generation? Just to show how the game will work?

Good idea. What would be better to have here though? We need some description of the game, even if it's not quite so high and mighty as it is now. Agreed. Having a description is good, it could just do with a bit of a tweak. I'm going to have to disagree with you a bit here. Most of the FAQs have been passed down from old versions, so some might need a tweak or should be removed (such as the ratings question), but most of them ARE newcomer's questions. If we do get rid of a load, where are we going to put the information within quick reach instead? The community forums might be ok, but a part of me feels nobody would click through, and putting them squarely at the front of the website makes it more likely for people to see. Also agreed, I thought the FAQ was one of the better pages. We just need to make sure important information (links, particularly) are also present in a proper section. There is quite a prominent link to the dev forums under How to Join actually. What do you propose instead? And yes, we do want it to be somewhat 'don't get involved unless you meet our criteria', because we'd prefer not to be inundated with applications from people we have to regrettably decline. That sounds harsh, and it kind of is, but there are unfortunately only certain types of people we can trust to use the development forums properly. Sorry about that, I'll try to avoid posting when tired in the future. My attempt at constructive criticism sort of became more like plain criticism. I mistook the link for a link to the community forums. The page seems to be generally aimed at recruiting people to the dev forums, and seeing it like that, the design is pretty good. The list spacing is a bit of an issue on mobile devices, though, requiring a decent amount of scrolling, and links to the Wiki & ModDB seem to be thrown in because we don't have a proper page for links. Also, having a link in the Get Involved section to these community forums could be something to consider. People might want to get involved in the community, too. Because that's the only page with a sidebar (and sidebars look horrible on all other pages). The two most important of these are included very clearly on the front page anyway. My point was that important links should really get their own page (sorry about the lack of clear communication). Again, the links on the home tab are right at the bottom. That page is pretty long on smaller screens (I generally use an iPad for web stuff), and a reader would have to either read that whole game description, or scroll right past it (there's no indication the links will be there). The post I should have made:Thanks for taking suggestions. Could we get links on the navigation bars between the dev & community forums, and a tab on the RG site with links to all official Thrive sites?

I've made a few changes to several pages. Rather than put all the important links on a separate page, I made the home page more of a "hub" as you were suggesting, with as many official links as I could think of. Most of them are still at the bottom of the page, but I think brief game information takes precedence in what should be shown to newcomers. As anyone watching the Shoutbox might have seen, I've added a chat link to the community forums only visible for members who are logged in. This is the link itself: tlk.io/thrivegameCould people test it and see if everything works properly? EDIT: Oh, and I added a banner to the dev forums explaining how to register. I tried adding navigation bar links, but it looked ugly so I went with just the banner in the end.

The new design looks great; the big links break up the text, making everything easier to read, and none of the pages feel too long. Another official link would be the deviantart page, which is still only linked in the FAQ. Is this still in active use? Chat looks nice, but I really only remember to use the chat because it's embedded.

Would it be possible to put the "Chat" tab on the mobile version of the website as well?

Would it be possible to put the "Chat" tab on the mobile version of the website as well? It's there. Click on navigation and chat will be at the bottom.
